Italy runs two intakes. September is the main one and February is the smaller second window. Behind both sit four separate deadlines, and most students watch only one: the last one.
That is the whole problem in a sentence: the four dates are set by four different bodies and are not published in one place. Your university sets its admission window. Your region's right-to-study agency sets the DSU scholarship deadline, which is separate from admission and frequently earlier. Universitaly pre-enrolment has its own window, and since academic year 2026/2027 it is a queue with a ceiling rather than a formality. And the consulate holds the national visa deadline: 30 November 2026 for academic year 2026/2027, 31 October 2027 for 2027/2028. Missing any one of the four costs the intake, not just the step.
The four clocks
| The clock | Who runs it | When it bites | What missing it costs |
|---|---|---|---|
| The admission window | Your university, on its own portal | Per course, published by the institution | No offer, so nothing downstream happens |
| The DSU scholarship deadline | Your region's right-to-study agency | Its own date, separate from admission and often earlier | Full fee, and no dormitory place |
| Universitaly pre-enrolment and validation | You file, your institution validates | The moment the window opens, because validation is capped | No validated pre-enrolment, no visa file |
| The national visa deadline | The Italian consulate | 30 November 2026 for AY 2026/27, 31 October 2027 for AY 2027/28 | The intake |
Only one of those dates is national and identical for everybody; the other three move by course, by region and by year. That is why "the Italy deadline" is a misleading phrase: there are four, and the national one is the loosest.
The visa deadline, row four. The same circular requires institutions to publish their own dates, per course, tied to when teaching starts, and says plainly those may be earlier. When your university publishes one it replaces the national date: Italy's visa deadline, then how long it takes.
Pre-enrolment, row three. This is what changed this year. An institution may validate no more than its allocated international places plus a maximum of 20 percent, and at the ceiling a monitoring tool inside Universitaly alerts it and suspends further validations. Each refusal frees one more and an institution may request an increase through its academic bodies, so it is a turnstile rather than a locked door. But no per-university allocation is published, so you cannot see how full the queue is before joining it, and your only defence is to be early: the 20 percent cap and Universitaly step by step.
DSU, row two. This is the clock almost nobody watches, and for a Bangladeshi family it usually decides whether Italy is affordable at all. DSU is the regional right-to-study scheme: a tuition waiver, a dormitory place, subsidised meals and an annual grant. It is income-based, not merit-based, it runs region by region with its own agency and its own deadline, and that deadline is separate from admission and often earlier. Eligibility runs through the ISEE parificato, built from translated and legalised Bangladeshi income and property documents, which is the longest paper chain in the application: the DSU scholarship explained, which agency covers you. Tuition is income-assessed the same way, which is how one student pays EUR 150 to 200 for a public degree and another EUR 2,500 to 4,000: is university really free in Italy.
One warning belongs here rather than in the money article: a scholarship you have only applied for is not money. Being eligible for DSU cannot count toward the funds you evidence without an attestation that it was awarded. Italy asks you to evidence EUR 10,179.85 a year from lawful, traceable sources, with no blocked account: Italy's proof of funds.
What is not true: that February is the backup plan
The most repeated wrong answer here is that if you miss September you can simply do February. February is real and it rescues some people, but it is not a spare six months.
The national visa deadline is attached to the academic year, not to the intake month. A February 2027 start belongs to academic year 2026/2027, whose visa date is 30 November 2026. So a February applicant's file is due *earlier relative to the start of teaching* than a September applicant's, not later. Unless your institution publishes something different for that course, and you should check because it is allowed to, February moves your start date by months and your paperwork deadline by weeks. Its catalogue is also a fraction of September's.
Which intake is actually yours
September is the straightforward case: you finish HSC or a bachelor's, you have a full year of run-up, and you want the largest catalogue and the best shot at a DSU dormitory.
February suits three readers. A student whose qualification evidence arrived late but is now complete. Someone retaking an English test, because the requirement is B2 across all four skills and one weak skill holds up a finished file: B2 in four skills, not IELTS 6.0. And a student who was refused, understood why, and fixed the actual defect: why Italy files get refused. It suits nobody who has not started the paperwork: the spring intake.
Working backwards for a September start
Only the last row is a published national date. The rest is our recommended order of work counted back from it, and your university's dates can fall earlier, so read them off its course page first. The example is a September 2027 start, ceiling 31 October 2027.
| Month | What should already be true | Clock |
|---|---|---|
| September to October 2026 | Shortlist fixed, each course's published dates read off its portal, CIMEA or Declaration of Value started | Qualification |
| November 2026 | Funds in a lawful, traceable account, preferably the student's own | Consulate |
| December 2026 | Language certificate in hand: B2 across all four skills for an English-taught course | Admission |
| January 2027 | Transcripts translated, attested and apostilled, passport valid for the whole cycle | Admission, DSU |
| February 2027 | Applications submitted in the first week each window opens, not the last | Admission |
| March 2027 | Your region's DSU agency identified and its call read line by line | DSU |
| April 2027 | ISEE parificato papers assembled: family income and property documents, translated and legalised | DSU |
| May 2027 | Offer accepted, Universitaly pre-enrolment filed the day its window opens | Pre-enrolment |
| June 2027 | Validation chased, the visa file assembled while you wait rather than after | Validation |
| July 2027 | VFS appointment booked, nothing still outstanding | Consulate |
| August 2027 | Biometrics given, file submitted | Consulate |
| September to October 2027 | The decision. Teaching starts, 31 October 2027 is the ceiling | Consulate |
Two rows get underestimated every year. The first is the very first: Italy accepts a CIMEA statement of comparability or a Declaration of Value, the institution deciding which, and CIMEA alone usually takes about a month before anyone at the university reads it (DoV or CIMEA, attestation and apostille). Bangladesh joined the Apostille Convention on 30 March 2025 and Italy accepts an apostille, unlike three of the nine.
The second is July: the appointment slot is not yours to control, because everyone on a September intake wants the same weeks (when there are no slots, booking one). The only defence is a file already complete, so whatever date you are offered you can keep it (the type D checklist, the Embassy and VFS).
February, compressed
| Stage | What a February start actually means |
|---|---|
| Qualification evidence | Start CIMEA or the Declaration of Value the previous summer. CIMEA alone is about a month |
| Admission | Autumn windows, a much smaller catalogue, English-taught places thinning first |
| DSU | Regional, with its own dates. Read your region's call before assuming a February entrant is inside it |
| Visa | The same academic-year deadline as September unless your institution publishes otherwise: 30 November 2026 for AY 2026/27 |
If it is now, here is what is realistically still open
| If you are reading this in | What is realistically still open |
|---|---|
| September to October 2026 | September 2026 has started: treat it as gone unless your institution says otherwise in writing. February 2027 sits behind 30 November 2026, which works only if your CIMEA or Declaration of Value is already moving and the funds are already in place. From a standing start, plan for September 2027 |
| November to December 2026 | AY 2026/27 shuts on 30 November 2026, so everything now is for September 2027. The best point in the year to begin: the qualification chain and the funds both get a full run |
| January to March 2027 | September 2027 is comfortably open and admission windows are running. Find your region's DSU call now, because its date is separate and often earlier |
| April to June 2027 | Still possible for September 2027, with no slack. If CIMEA has not started, that alone is about a month before the university looks at it |
| July to August 2027 | Only with an offer and a validated pre-enrolment in hand. Starting paperwork now against a 31 October 2027 ceiling is how weak funds files get built |
| September to October 2027 | 31 October 2027 is the AY 2027/28 ceiling and your university's is earlier. If you are not at the VFS stage, you are planning the next cycle |
Who should wait for the next cycle instead of rushing
Four tests. If two are true for you, take the next cycle.
Your qualification evidence has not been started and your binding date is under about two months away. CIMEA alone is about a month, before the university reads it.
Your money is not yet in a lawful, traceable account, or it belongs to someone outside the family unit up to a relative of the fourth degree. The consulate checks the origin of the funds against the family's income and assets, and accounts in the student's own name are expressly preferred. A balance that appears shortly before submission is the exact pattern that check exists to find: bank statements for a student visa.
Your language certificate does not cover all four skills at B2 for an English-taught course. There is no national IELTS 6.0 rule in Italy, whatever you have been told, and a university may ask for more.
Your plan depends on a DSU award you have only applied for, which is not money for the visa file.
The cost of being wrong is not symmetrical, which is the point. Waiting one cycle costs a year. A refusal costs the year *and* the money: a single-country European application spends roughly BDT 2 to 4 lakh before any decision, with IELTS on computer listed at BDT 29,600, attestation, translation and legalisation at BDT 10,000 to 30,000 and courier at BDT 4,000 to 9,000, none refundable (what it costs from Dhaka, IELTS fees and dates). A refusal also makes the second file harder, because it has to explain the first.
Who this page is not for
If you are applying for a Master universitario, a PhD, Erasmus, a single course or a foundation course, these dates are not your deadlines. Those categories have no national time limit, only the rule that the application cannot come after teaching starts. The Italian word Master means a professional qualification of about a year and is not the Laurea Magistrale, which normally runs two: a master's in Italy from Bangladesh.
If your course is restricted-access, such as English-taught medicine or dentistry, there is a fifth clock: the entrance test's own registration window, aligned with nothing else. The last IMAT cycle we confirmed had registration from 26 August to 9 September 2026, closing at 15:00 Italian time, for a test on 29 September 2026 — and registering for it does not exempt you from applying for the visa: medicine in Italy in English.
And if you have not chosen a country yet, notice what this page is telling you. Italy's calendar is unusually front-loaded compared with the rest of our nine, and if reading it makes Italy feel tight rather than attractive, that is information rather than something to argue with: what Italy is actually good for, study in Italy from Bangladesh and the Italy country page. The cross-country version is the European application timeline; if you are waiting on a result, apply while you wait and Italy after HSC.
Last verified: 19 September 2026. The visa dates and the validation cap come from the ministerial circular for academic years 2026/2027 and 2027/2028. Institutional dates, DSU calls and admission windows are published separately and change every year, so confirm both before booking anything.

Common questions
When should I start applying to Italy for a September intake?+
About a year ahead, and the first thing to start is not the application. It is the qualification evidence, meaning the CIMEA statement of comparability or the Declaration of Value, because CIMEA alone usually takes about a month before the university has even read it. Working back from the national ceiling of 31 October 2027 for academic year 2027/28, that puts the start of the paperwork in the autumn of the year before.
Does Italy have a February intake, and is it easier to get into?+
Italy has a September intake, which is the main one, and a February intake, which is smaller. February is not easier and it is not a spare six months. The national visa deadline is attached to the academic year rather than the intake month, so a February 2027 start sits behind 30 November 2026, the same date as the September 2026 one, unless your institution publishes something different for that course. February's programme catalogue is also much smaller.
What is the deadline for an Italian student visa?+
The application must reach the competent consulate by 30 November 2026 for academic year 2026/2027, and by 31 October 2027 for 2027/2028. Those dates bind Laurea, Laurea Magistrale and Diploma accademico courses, single-cycle degrees included. Your institution is allowed to publish its own earlier date for your specific course, and when it does, that earlier date is the one that binds you.
Is the DSU scholarship deadline the same as the university's deadline?+
No, and this is the most common way a Bangladeshi family loses the scholarship while still getting the admission. DSU is run region by region, each region has its own agency, and each agency sets its own deadline, which is separate from admission and often earlier. Find the agency covering your university's region and read its call before you assume anything about its dates.
Can I apply for an Italian visa after teaching has already started?+
In practice, no. The national ceiling for academic year 2026/2027 falls on 30 November 2026, which is after September teaching begins, but institutions publish their own earlier dates precisely to prevent a student arriving after the course has started. Treat your institution's published date as the real one, and treat a start that has already begun as closed unless the institution tells you otherwise in writing.
Can I count a DSU scholarship I have applied for as my proof of funds?+
No. Merely applying for, or being eligible for, a regional right-to-study scholarship cannot count toward the means of subsistence without an explicit attestation that it was awarded. Italy asks you to evidence EUR 10,179.85 for the year from lawful and traceable sources, preferably in the student's own name, and that evidence has to stand on its own whether or not the scholarship comes through.
How long does the Italian consulate take to decide a student visa?+
No Italian authority publishes a guaranteed processing time for a national study visa, so nobody can honestly give you a number of days for Dhaka. EU law sets a maximum of 90 days for a complete student application, but that clock only starts when the file is complete, which is a strong argument for submitting a finished file rather than a fast one. Tracking shows where your passport is, not how the decision is going.
Do Master's, PhD and Erasmus applicants have the same deadline?+
No. Master, PhD, Erasmus, single courses and foundation courses have no national deadline at all. The only rule is that the application cannot come after teaching starts. Note also that the Italian Master universitario is a professional qualification lasting about a year and is not the Laurea Magistrale, which normally runs two years and does fall under the national deadline.
Is it too late to apply for Italy this year?+
It depends on where your qualification evidence and your funds already stand, not on how much calendar is left. If CIMEA or the Declaration of Value has not been started, that alone is about a month before the university looks at it, and rushing the funds documents behind it is the most common way a file gets refused. If two of those pieces are missing and your binding date is under about two months away, the next cycle is the better bet.
What is the 20 percent validation cap and does it affect my timing?+
Since academic year 2026/2027 an institution may validate no more than its allocated international places plus a maximum of 20 percent. At the ceiling, a monitoring tool in Universitaly alerts the institution and suspends further validations, though each visa refusal frees one more and an institution can request an increase through its academic bodies. No per-university allocation is published, so you cannot see how full the queue is. The effect on your timing is simple: pre-enrol the day your window opens, not the week before the deadline.
