No visa appointment slots: what works and what is a scam

Why the calendar is empty

Nothing mysterious is happening. Three ordinary facts collide every summer.

European universities cluster their September intake deadlines in the same few weeks. Bangladeshi students therefore all receive offers, all complete their documents, and all reach the appointment stage within the same window. And a visa centre has a fixed number of biometric booths and a fixed number of staff.

The result is a shortage between roughly June and August at the Dhaka centres, easing sharply from October. It is a capacity problem, not a conspiracy, and it is entirely predictable — which is the strongest argument for treating the appointment as a step to plan for in March rather than a formality to handle in July.

What the rules actually say

Students often ask whether a mission is obliged to give them a slot. The answer is more limited than they hope.

For a Schengen short-stay (type C) application the Visa Code says that where an appointment system is used, the appointment should as a rule take place within two weeks of being requested. That is a real standard, and it is worth citing if a visitor visa is being blocked.

For a national long-stay student application, there is no equivalent EU rule. Scheduling is a matter of national practice, and the mission is not bound to any published interval. So the honest position is: you have no entitlement to a date, and the tactics below are about improving your odds, not asserting a right.

What genuinely helps

The scam, and why it is worse than losing money

⚠️ A market exists in Dhaka for appointment slots. Some sellers are automated bots holding bookings, some are fraud, and some are simply people who take a fee and disappear.

The financial loss is not the main risk. Visa centres routinely cancel bookings made through third parties or bots, and they do it after the money is spent and the calendar has moved on. Worse, an application associated with an irregularity starts its life with a question attached — which is the last thing a student file needs. The agency fraud guide sets out the wider pattern.

There is no legitimate paid queue-jump for a student appointment at any of these missions. If there were, the mission would sell it itself.

When it is time to talk to the university

There is a point where working the booking page stops being the right activity. It arrives when the earliest available slot sits after your enrolment deadline, or so close to it that a normal decision time cannot fit.

At that point, do three things in this order.

1. 1Write to the admissions office, plainly: here is my offer, here is the earliest appointment available to me, here is the date I would be lodging. Ask whether the place can be held or deferred.
2. 2Ask whether the university will write to the mission. Some will. A letter from the institution stating an enrolment deadline carries weight that an applicant's own email does not.
3. 3Decide about the next intake early. Deferring in June with a place held is a manageable delay. Discovering in late August that the appointment cannot happen is a lost year and a lost fee.

A note on the countries with no appointment at all

Finland, Sweden and Denmark decide the residence permit online, so there is no visa appointment in the usual sense — the in-person step is identity verification and biometrics, and for Finland that means a trip to New Delhi. Bulgaria's D visa is an in-person interview at its New Delhi embassy. For those routes the scarce resource is a Delhi appointment plus an Indian visa, which needs even more lead time.
