A Hungarian student visa from Dhaka: a local counter, a New Delhi decision, an untracked gap

In short: Hungary takes D-type study applications at VFS Global in Dhaka, which its own site names as the official partner of the Dhaka Office of the Embassy of Hungary in Bangladesh. The decision is still taken in New Delhi. You save the trip; your file does not. And the leg between the Dhaka counter and the deciding mission is the one part of the process that no tracking page narrates. ⚠️ Corrected 19 September 2026: earlier descriptions, including our own, said a student filed in person at the consular office after booking by email. The useful question is not where you go

Almost everyone preparing a Hungarian application starts by looking for an address. The address matters, but the expensive question is which city decides the file — because that governs your timeline, who you can usefully ask anything during the wait, and how long a missing document takes to repair.

Hungary is the most misread of our nine here, because the honest answer has three parts. The counter is in Dhaka, the consular decision is in New Delhi, and the residence permit itself is ruled on in Hungary. All three are true at once. People who hear only the first assume the whole process is local and are surprised by the silence; people who hear only the second start pricing an Indian visa they will never need.

Three places, three different jobs

What is no longer true

The most widely repeated wrong answer in this market is that a Hungarian study file is handed in personally at the consular office in Gulshan, with the appointment arranged by email. That was once correct. It is not the current arrangement. The counter for a D-type study file is VFS Global, and VFS describes itself as the official partner of that office.

This is not pedantry about a building. Following the old description costs a wasted day at the wrong door, or two weeks waiting on an email sent to an address that was never going to schedule you. The worse cost is subtler: it makes the process sound informal and personal, and a process that sounds informal is exactly the kind people believe an agent can bend. If a site or an adviser still describes email booking and consular submission, treat their information as out of date — and assume the rest of it may be too.

The steps in order, and who owns each one

The stage nobody narrates

A tracking system reports what happens at the counter: file accepted, passport returned, ready for collection. The stretch in the middle, where your file reaches the responsible mission and waits on an officer's desk, has no published commentary at all. No status line tells you it has left Dhaka, none tells you it has arrived, and none tells you an officer has opened it.

The predictable result arrives in every intake. A student refreshes the page daily, nothing moves, and they conclude the file is lost. Stillness there is the ordinary appearance of the system, not a symptom. The practical consequence is worth stating plainly. The centre cannot tell you why a file is slow, because its staff have a status field rather than a case file. They are not consular officers and they cannot move a queue in another country. When they say they do not know, that is literally true, and a daily phone call spends your attention on the one part of the process where you have no leverage.

One rule does work in your favour. EU law under Directive 2016/801 gives a complete student application a maximum of 90 days for a decision. The word doing the work is complete: the clock starts when nothing further is outstanding, not when you hand the file over. So being slow with a request for documents costs twice — the wait lengthens and the clock moves further away. Submission day, originals, and your passport

What happens at the counter is a completeness check against a list: are the documents present, are the copies legible, is the form signed, do the photographs meet the specification. It is not an assessment of whether your bank statement is convincing. Clearing the counter clears a clerical hurdle and nothing more — which cuts both ways, because leaving the centre feeling reassured also means nothing.

Your passport stays with the centre for the whole processing period, because the sticker has to be physically placed in it. No other travel, and no other application needing the original; if you have an unavoidable need, raise it before you submit rather than after — see what happens to your passport while the visa is processed.

When there are no slots

This is the most common real obstacle on the Hungarian route, and the good news is that it is solvable. Slots are released in batches and cancellations reappear, so checking regularly genuinely helps, and starting the day your offer lands helps more than any technique applied in August. What does not work, and deserves saying directly: paying for a slot. An appointment is not something anyone can sell you, and a person offering one is selling something they do not control. The same applies to anyone promising to speed up a decision — it is taken in a city where they have no standing either.

Fees, honestly

There is deliberately no figure in this article. Two separate charges exist, set by two different bodies: the visa or procedural fee set by the Hungarian authorities, and the service fee VFS charges for operating the centre. Extras such as courier return or SMS alerts are genuinely optional, and declining them does not weaken an application.

Both change, and at different times, so the only safe place to read the current numbers is the VFS Bangladesh page and the mission's own page. The appointment itself is not one of the things the system charges for, so a price quoted for a slot is not a fee. Decided in Delhi, but not priced like Delhi

This distinction is worth money. Our cost work puts Bangladesh-side spend for a file decided in Delhi at roughly BDT 3-5 lakh, against roughly BDT 2-4 lakh for an ordinary single-country application — but that higher band is built out of an Indian visa, flights and a stay. Hungary removes the journey while keeping the Delhi decision, so the spend belongs in the lower band.

What does not change is that none of it comes back. Attestation, translation and legalisation run BDT 10,000-30,000, courier BDT 4,000-9,000, and a one-way ticket BDT 70,000-120,000, and a refusal refunds none of it. Who this route is wrong for

• Anyone who thinks contacting the Delhi embassy directly will speed things up. It will not. The process runs through the Dhaka counter, and going around it means standing outside your own file.
• Anyone who treats the sticker as the finished document. It is permission to enter; the right to stay comes from the residence permit, applied for after arrival — see national type D versus Schengen type C and your first 90 days.
• Anyone whose academic base is not yet in place. A counter does not fill gaps. 2. 2Start attestation and translation now, not after an appointment is confirmed. It consumes the most calendar time and is most often started last.

The honest summary

Hungary sits on the easier side of our nine: the counter is in Dhaka, no Indian visa is needed, an apostille is accepted, and there are two intakes a year, September and February. But easy is not the same as fast. The decision is made in another city, the file physically goes there, and nobody publishes a commentary on that journey. The only real protection against those silent weeks is to make the file complete before you reach the counter — because the 90-day clock starts when there is nothing left to ask you for.
