Studying nursing in Cyprus from Bangladesh: an English-taught degree is not a nursing licence

Two questions hide inside "can I study nursing in Cyprus", and they have different answers. Whether you could then work as a nurse is a separate decision, taken by a different body, and Cypriot hospitals work in Greek.

So Cyprus is one of the more realistic places in Europe to study nursing in English, and one of the worst places to assume the licence follows the degree. Somebody who plans it the second way does not fail at the visa stage. They graduate, and find that the thing they came for was never in the envelope.

Three questions, three different bodies

Nearly every wrong answer here comes from letting one of these imply the next.

Read the middle row again. Someone who already holds a BSc in Nursing from Dhaka is rarely asking about admission at all.

Question one: can you study nursing in Cyprus?

That is enough to say the route exists. It is not enough to name a university, and we are not going to. For a regulated profession the question is never whether a programme sounds impressive; it is whether that exact programme is accredited, and whether its graduates are registrable. Two checks, two bodies, and a glossy page answers neither.

What shapes this is language, not price. At the Republic's two public universities bachelor's teaching is predominantly in Greek, with English-taught provision concentrated at master's level, so the cheap public band of EUR 3,500 to 7,000 a year is mostly closed to a school-leaver arriving from HSC. Those two public institutions are the University of Cyprus and the Cyprus University of Technology, and we make no claim about nursing at either — see also a master's in Cyprus and studying in Cyprus after HSC. An English-taught nursing bachelor's therefore runs through the private sector, where the fee is a list price.

When somebody shows you a specific university, programme, intake or fee, run three checks first.

• Are the institution and the exact programme on the national register of accredited programmes? That register is published by the Cyprus Agency of Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education, and it is the only version of this answer that is not marketing — our general guide to choosing is best universities in Cyprus, which likewise names no nursing provider.
• Are its nursing graduates registrable as nurses? Accreditation of a degree and registrability of its graduates are not the same claim. Ask admissions in writing which body registers their graduates.
• What language are the clinical placements conducted in? The single most useful question here, and almost nobody asks it. A degree can be taught in English and still place you on a Greek-speaking ward.

One note on the country: this is about the Republic of Cyprus, the EU member state, not the north, which carries different recognition consequences for a qualification you mean to use professionally — the Republic of Cyprus versus North Cyprus.

The English rule has two layers, and a clinical course has three

Cyprus is the one of the nine where the English requirement is set by the state, not the university. Following a Council of Ministers decision of 19 July 2023, minimum criteria for admitting students from third countries are published nationally, and Bangladesh is a third country here.

Two things matter more than the numbers. A medium-of-instruction letter appears nowhere on the official list, whatever a recruiter says — what an MOI certificate actually is and studying in Cyprus without IELTS. And the floor is low, with a published foundation route below it at roughly IELTS 4.0, TOEFL iBT 42 or PTE 43 — real tuition, real living costs and real time, for no academic credit — English-taught versus local-language programmes.

Question two: is a Bangladeshi nursing qualification recognised in Cyprus?

We could not confirm an answer to this, and that is the honest report rather than a gap we are hiding. What we can tell you is exactly who does not decide it. Not the university: admissions decides whether to teach you. Not the accreditation agency: it accredits programmes, not people. Not a consultancy, ever. Recognition of a foreign qualification is taken by a national regulator under health law, case by case, on your certificate, transcript and hours.

We are not printing the name or web address of a Cypriot nursing council, because we have not verified either from an official Cypriot page for this update, and a wrong regulator sends you to the wrong office with the wrong file. Two routes beat a guess: start from the Republic's government portal at gov.cy, and ask the university's admissions office in writing which body registers its own nursing graduates. Keep the reply.

Recognition is a decision, not a property of your certificate. Nobody can promise it in advance, and an adviser who does has told you something about themselves rather than about Cyprus. For the same reason we publish no timeline for it.

If your qualification is for further study rather than practice, the question is easier: what it is worth in ECTS. A three-year bachelor's is roughly 180 and a four-year one roughly 240; four-year honours travels almost everywhere, while a three-year pass degree is usually fixed by a one-year Bangladeshi master's on top — three-year versus four-year degrees and CGPA and ECTS conversion.

Question three: could you practise as a nurse in Cyprus?

Only with registration, and registration brings language with it. Our cross-Europe nursing guide records that Greek is needed in most Cypriot hospitals, and an English-taught degree does not change what language a patient speaks.

Here is a trap inside our own Cyprus material. You may have read that long-term residence after five years of continuous legal residence requires Greek at A2 plus stable income, with student years counted as half. All true, and none of it is the nursing registration requirement — one is an immigration rule about staying, the other a health rule about practising. The residence side is in post-study work and residence and from student to work permit.

The other conflation is worse. Nursing and care work are not the same job. Nursing is a regulated profession with a register, a protected title and a licence. Care assistant or caregiver work is different work, with a different qualification and a different permit. When an offer slides between the two words in one conversation, or promises a nursing job at the end of a course, check the register rather than the promise — the real student-to-work-permit route and a student visa is not a work permit.

If the plan is to work there, start Greek in your first semester. It is not optional preparation; it is the centre of the plan — how much local language you need.

The money, the timing, and what you must show

These four are constantly confused.

The funds are shown, not frozen — Cyprus proof of funds and what studying in Cyprus costs, which carries the Bangladesh-side spend of roughly BDT 1.1 to 1.8 lakh, none refundable. On work: there is none at all in the first six months, the first semester. After that it is 20 hours a week in named sectors, 38 in holidays, contract stamped at the labour department — student work rules in Cyprus and part-time rules across Europe. That matters twice for a nursing applicant: a clinical timetable does not leave 20 hours free, and because the sectors are named by the state, never assume a hospital job is open to you. Afterwards, master's and PhD graduates may obtain a 12-month job-search permit, while bachelor's graduates convert through employer sponsorship — and Cyprus is in the EU but not in Schengen, so the permit carries no Schengen travel — is Cyprus in Schengen.

On timing: your institution, not you, files the entry permit application with the Civil Registry and Migration Department in Nicosia, and European law allows a maximum of 90 days to decide a complete application — a legal ceiling, not an estimate of your case. Intakes are September and January to February — intakes and deadlines, applying from Dhaka, where you apply, how long it takes, why files are refused and entry requirements.

Who should not do this

Not you, if you already hold a Bangladeshi nursing qualification and want to work rather than study. That is recognition, assessed by a regulator, not a student route. Enrolling while assuming the licence sorts itself out later is the version of this plan that goes wrong most often.

Not you, if the "nursing" on offer is care work. Check the title, the register and the permit, in that order.

Not you, if the budget depends on part-time earnings. Six months of zero income, capped hours in named sectors and a clinical timetable will not fund a degree.

Not you, if you needed Schengen mobility. Cyprus is in the EU and not in Schengen.

Not you, if the goal is healthcare in general rather than nursing in particular. Public health, pharmaceutical science and the laboratory routes admit on the record you already hold, run in English and carry no licence gate — the health routes that are not medicine; the same logic governs psychology and social work.

What we could not confirm, and who answers each

We would rather print this than fill the gaps with plausible sentences.

What to do next, in order
