Straight to Cyprus after HSC: why the cheap public route is not the one open to you

The short answer

Yes, an HSC gets you into a bachelor's degree in the Republic of Cyprus. An HSC, Alim or A-Level result is the normal entry qualification, you do not need an academic foundation year on top of it, and the minimum average result is set by the programme rather than by any national rule. That is the easy half of the answer.

The hard half decides everything else about your plan. At the Republic's two public universities, bachelor's teaching is predominantly in Greek. English-taught provision at both is concentrated at master's level. So the EUR 3,500 to 7,000 public tuition in our country dataset — genuinely cheap by European standards — describes a route that is mostly not available to a school-leaver arriving from Dhaka with no Greek. Your realistic route is the private English-medium universities, and their fees sit above that band.

Twelve years of schooling, and where it stops being enough

European admission at bachelor's level rests on a simple test: have you completed twelve years of schooling. A Bangladeshi HSC does, an Alim does, and A-Levels do. That is why the foundation year pushed at HSC holders across this market is, for Cyprus, usually a product you do not need — and bachelor's in Europe after HSC sets out how the same test works across the nine countries we cover.

Two boundaries are worth stating plainly, because both get blurred in sales conversations.

SSC is not HSC. Ten years of schooling does not meet the test anywhere in our nine, and no amount of paperwork converts it. If someone is offering you a European bachelor's on an SSC, read can you study in Europe after SSC before you pay a deposit.

A gap is not a disqualification. Cyprus accepts a study gap when it is explained, and the operative word is explained: an honest, evidenced account of what you did in those years. What Cyprus adds on top: two English layers, and an accreditation check

Cyprus has no national entrance exam for a bachelor's degree and no central admissions portal. You apply to institutions directly. What it does have is an English rule that works differently from every other country in our nine, and a recognition question that decides whether your degree will be worth anything.

The English rule has two layers and both bind

Read the first row again, because it contains the correction this market most needs. There is no medium-of-instruction option on the state's list. An MOI letter from your Bangladeshi college, which genuinely works in some European systems, does not satisfy the Cypriot state requirement — so if an agent tells you Cyprus will take your MOI, they are describing a country other than this one. Notice also what that foundation row is. It is a language programme for applicants below IELTS 5.0 — not the academic foundation year that gets sold to HSC holders who already meet the schooling test. If your English is at or above the state minimum, you should not be buying a foundation year at all.

Accreditation, not ranking, is the check that matters

Because Cyprus is a private-sector-heavy system, world rankings are unusually quiet about it and cannot do your due diligence. Two things have to be true: the institution is recognised, and your exact programme is accredited. One more check before money changes hands. This page is about the Republic of Cyprus. The north of the island runs a separate system with different admission, visa and degree-recognition questions, and the two get presented interchangeably in Dhaka. The calendar: work backwards from June, not forwards from your result

This is the most useful table on the page, and the reason is that Cyprus publishes no admissions deadline you can plan against. There are two teaching starts, September and January to February, and because most international students attend private universities that admit on a rolling basis, a university will say yes to you in August. That yes is not the binding date.

The binding date comes from the permit. Your institution submits the entry permit application to the Civil Registry and Migration Department in Nicosia, and EU law allows a member state up to 90 days to decide a complete student application. Count ninety days back from the first day of teaching and you get the real wall. The two bold rows below are that arithmetic. So: the month you are already late for is June. An application made in August for that September cannot arrive in time, however enthusiastic the university sounds. And if you are reading this in September hoping to start in January, the start of October is your wall and it is weeks away, not months. Because the permit is filed by your institution, the longest stage of your file is one where you are not the applicant. There is nothing in your name to track and nobody to chase. The practical defence is to ask admissions, in writing, on what date they filed and what the file contained — an institution that forwards an incomplete set does not get you refused, it silently stops your clock. The money, with the part people miss

Two rows deserve a sentence each. The repatriation bank guarantee is a separate bank instrument sitting on top of the balance you show, and Bangladeshi banks are slow with unfamiliar instruments — start it at the beginning of your timeline, not the end, and get the exact wording from the university first, because the wording is what gets files rejected. And the zero-income row is not a warning about how hard it is to find work; it is a rule. A full semester has to be funded with no earnings at all.

Who should not do this

A page that only sells is not useful, so here are the readers for whom this route is wrong.

You need to earn from the first month. You cannot. Six months, by rule. If your plan depends on part-time income arriving in October, the plan fails in October, and part-time work rules across Europe will show you countries where the first-day position is different.

Your family can show EUR 7,000 but nothing beyond it. The repatriation guarantee sits on top, the Bangladesh-side spend of BDT 1.1 to 1.8 lakh is gone before you fly, and none of it comes back if the permit is refused.

You chose Cyprus for the weekend trips to Paris. Cyprus is in the EU and not in Schengen. You will apply for a Schengen visa from Nicosia much as you would from Dhaka.

You wanted the cheap public degree, in English, at 18. That specific combination mostly does not exist in Cyprus at bachelor's level. It becomes genuinely available later — English-taught provision at the public universities is concentrated at master's level, which is why a master's in Cyprus is a different and often better proposition.

You want a fast route to settling in Europe. Long-term residence needs five years of continuous lawful residence, student years are generally counted at half, and A2 Greek and stable income are required. Anyone selling you PR on a study visa is selling you arithmetic that does not work — post-study work and residence has the honest version.

The honest unknowns

Three things we will not pretend to know. No Cypriot authority publishes a processing time for a student file, so a specific date from anyone is a guess; the 90-day legal cap is the only real number. No authority publishes a success or refusal rate, in Cyprus or anywhere in our nine, and the Schengen statistics quoted in Dhaka do not describe Cyprus at all, since Cyprus is not in Schengen. And your funds figure and your repatriation guarantee amount are not national numbers — your university sets both, so the only reliable version is the one it gives you in writing.
