Proof of funds for a Cypriot student visa: three numbers, and the one real test

In short: Cyprus asks you to evidence roughly EUR 7,000 for one year through a bank letter and statement, and the figure is set by your university, not by law — EUR 5,000-7,000 in practice. There is no blocked account; the money is shown, not locked. A separate repatriation bank guarantee is required on top. Files do not fail because the balance is small. They fail because the money is not explicable.

Three numbers get called "the money you need for Cyprus", and almost every bad plan treats them as one. One number you have to show. One number you spend simply to apply. One number is what the degree actually costs. They come from different places, at different times, and only two of them ever leave your account.

The numberCyprus figureWhere it sitsDoes it actually leave you?
What you must showEUR 5,000-7,000 for one year; plan on EUR 7,000Your own or a sponsor's accountNo. It is evidence, not a payment, and it is not blocked
What you spend to applyIELTS BDT 29,600, attestation and legalisation BDT 10,000-30,000, courier BDT 4,000-9,000, one-way ticket BDT 70,000-120,000Gone before any decision is madeYes, and none of it comes back on a refusal
What the degree costsTuition EUR 3,500-7,000 a year, plus EUR 500-800 a month to live (EUR 6,000-9,600 over twelve months)Across the whole courseYes, every year

When someone says Cyprus "only needs seven thousand euros", they have read the first row and quietly dropped the other two. The money in row one stays yours. The money in rows two and three does not. The full arithmetic is in what studying in Cyprus costs.

Who sets the number

There is no single national answer to how much Cyprus wants, because the amount is not fixed in legislation — the university sets it. In practice it lands between EUR 5,000 and EUR 7,000, so planning on EUR 7,000 is the safe default. Your own figure has to come in writing from your institution's international office.

A second requirement reaches many applicants late: Cyprus also asks for a repatriation bank guarantee, a bank-backed assurance covering a return home if needed. The university states the amount and format. It is not a blocked account, but it is a separate bank instrument, and banks are slow with unfamiliar ones — so it belongs at the start of your timeline, not the end.

The blocked-account confusion is worth naming directly: Germany's rule gets applied to the whole continent in conversation, and Cyprus does not use one. The distinction is set out in blocked accounts and why none of our nine use them, and the Europe-wide picture is in proof of funds for a European student visa.

The real test is explicability, not size

Nobody reading your file is checking arithmetic. They are asking three questions, and none of them is about the total.

Whose money is it? In the student's own name is cleanest. In a sponsor's account it still works, but two documents have to travel with it: proof of the relationship, and proof of the sponsor's own income. A balance sitting in an account belonging to someone your file cannot connect you to answers no question at all. Who may sponsor you and what is needed is in sponsors and affidavits, and which formats survive scrutiny is in affidavits that embassies actually accept.

How long has it been there? A balance that has sat for six months and the same balance that arrived last Tuesday are not the same document. The first describes a family's finances. The second describes an event, and events need explaining.

Where did it come from? This is the centre of the whole file, and it is where Bangladeshi applications are weakest. The mechanics of how financial papers are checked are in how embassies verify your financial documents.

Why the late deposit is the single most damaging thing

Five months of an ordinary balance, then one large credit immediately before applying. That single line rewrites the question your file is answering. It was "is there enough". It becomes "where did this come from, and why exactly now" — and the easiest answer available, that a relative lent it, actively hurts, because borrowed money that must be returned is not your capacity to pay.

The same instinct produces the other classic failure, the inflated statement: why those get caught, and consequences that outlast the application by years.

What evidences the amount, and what evidences the source

These are two different jobs. Most files only do the first one.

Evidences the amountEvidences the source
Bank solvency certificate — a balance on one dateSalary certificate and twelve months of a salary account
The closing balance on a statementTrade licence, business account statement and tax return
An FDR or savings certificate receiptLand sale or lease deeds, with deposits that match them
A one-page bank letterRemittance records through legal channels
A sponsor's account balanceProof of relationship plus the sponsor's own income

You cannot submit a file without the left column. You pass on the right one. What a solvency certificate does and does not prove is in the bank solvency certificate; what to ask for at the counter is in getting a bank statement; what an officer actually reads is in bank statements for a European student visa.

Seven things that sink a file

  1. 1A large late deposit. For the reason above: it converts a question about size into a question about origin.
  2. 2An exactly-sufficient balance. Enough on paper, no headroom in life. What a weaker currency does to a plan is in what a falling taka does to your plan.
  3. 3A sponsor who cannot explain their own income. What happens when someone checks is in when the embassy calls your sponsor.
  4. 4Documents that have expired by the time they are read. Pull the solvency certificate and statement last — see how long each document stays valid.
  5. 5The same money shown twice. One account, two siblings, two files, one balance.
  6. 6Money with no traceable channel. Informal transfers leave no record, so on paper they read as unexplained credits.
  7. 7A balance submitted alone. No document about where it came from, and a hope nobody asks.

The Cyprus-specific risk: paying before the decision

This is the paragraph that separates Cyprus from the rest of our nine, and it is the most valuable thing on this page.

Most Bangladeshi students in Cyprus study at private universities — UNIC, EUC, Frederick, Neapolis, UCLan. Private means tuition is a genuine price rather than an income-assessed contribution, and a real part of the first year is frequently payable in advance.

That changes the money question entirely. In an Italian or German file the question is "can I evidence a maintenance figure". In a Cypriot file there are two questions: can I pay a real fee, and simultaneously evidence maintenance. This is exactly why Cyprus can be financially harder than its modest headline cost suggests. The money is not larger. It is earlier, and it arrives in one block.

And here is the risk. That money leaves Bangladesh before the visa is decided. No amount of paperwork removes that exposure; reading first only reduces it. Before you transfer anything, have these four answers in writing, in the institution's own offer letter or published policy.

  1. 1What is refunded if the visa is refused — as a percentage, and which portion is never refunded under any circumstance.
  2. 2Which line is a non-refundable registration or application fee — normally gone for good, and separate from tuition.
  3. 3Which account the money goes to — the institution's own published bank account, never an individual's account and never an agency's.
  4. 4How long a refund takes and in which currency — if it returns in taka, the exchange loss is entirely yours.

An agency's summary containing all four is not enough. An agency's document is not the institution's promise. The promise exists only in the institution's own offer letter or policy. The legal routes and the paperwork for sending money are in how to send tuition from Bangladesh, and card problems when paying fees online are covered in paying a European visa fee from Dhaka. Whether to use an agency at all is costed in the real cost of an agency versus doing it yourself.

Verify the institution, and the programme, before any money moves

Whether the institution is recognised and whether your specific programme is recognised are two different questions, and the second is the one people skip. Both are checkable against the Cypriot quality-assurance authority's own register. The step-by-step method is in checking a private university or college, and confirming the paper you were sent is genuine is in checking that an offer letter is genuine. For one common case, our University of Nicosia guide covers that institution's fees and honest caveats.

One warning deserves its own line: money paid to an institution in North Cyprus is not money paid into the EU route. Recognition, the visa and everything downstream work differently there. Read the Republic of Cyprus versus North Cyprus before, not after, a transfer.

In the EU, not in Schengen — and that is a budget fact

Cyprus is an EU member and is still not in the Schengen area, so you receive a Cypriot national Category-D visa rather than a Schengen visa. That is not itself a money fact, but it enters the budget sideways: students set aside money for weekend travel the permit does not allow. What it means in practice is in is Cyprus in Schengen, and the general rules for travelling on a student residence permit are in travelling in Schengen on a student residence permit.

The apostille works for Cyprus, and shortens the chain

Bangladesh joined the Apostille Convention, in force 30 March 2025, and Cyprus accepts an apostille. Denmark, Greece and Finland objected under Article 12, so for those three an apostille is worthless and the full consular legalisation chain still applies. For Cyprus that is good news: the authentication chain on your documents, financial papers included, is shorter, cheaper and faster.

Note the limit. An apostille certifies a signature and a seal. It says nothing about the money inside the document. An apostilled solvency certificate still only evidences an amount, never a source. Which countries accept what is in Bangladesh's apostille and the countries that refuse it, and the order of the steps is in document attestation and apostille.

Who should not choose Cyprus on the money argument

Not every article should end in yes. On the finances, Cyprus is the wrong answer for at least three kinds of plan.

Anyone counting on first-semester work to cover the fee. There is no right to work for the first six months, the first semester. After that it is 20 hours a week in named sectors, 38 during holidays, with the contract stamped at the labour department. "Work from day one" is simply a false claim; the rules are in student work rules in Cyprus.

Anyone planning to borrow the balance for three weeks. That is precisely the pattern the whole verification process exists to detect, and money returned after submission still shows in the statement. The honest alternatives — loans, sponsors, real funding — are in education loans and show money.

Anyone choosing Cyprus only because the headline living cost looks low. Living costs genuinely are modest. But the advance tuition instalment means the cash requirement arrives earlier and in one piece, which is a real problem for a family whose money is real but arrives in stages. What Cyprus is genuinely good at is in what Cyprus is actually good for.

The order to do this in

  1. 1Get the offer letter. Your tuition, your instalment schedule and your refund terms are there, and only there are they binding.
  2. 2Get the funds figure in writing from the university, with the repatriation guarantee's amount and format.
  3. 3Start arranging the account today. Six months builds a balance with a history. Two weeks does not.
  4. 4Collect source documents first — salary, trade licence, tax returns, deeds, remittance records.
  5. 5Pull the solvency certificate and statement last, so they are still current on the day you submit.
  6. 6Warn your bank about the repatriation guarantee early. It is not routine counter work.
  7. 7Read the refund terms before a single transfer, and send money only to the institution's own account.

The wider process is mapped in study in Cyprus from Bangladesh and where Bangladeshi students apply for a Cyprus visa; how money comes up at interview is in visa interview questions about money.

The whole page in one sentence: Cyprus does not measure your balance, it reads your explanation. A balance can be assembled in two weeks. An explanation cannot.

Common questions

How much money do I actually have to show for Cyprus?+

One year of funds, which runs EUR 5,000-7,000 in practice, and planning on EUR 7,000 is the safe assumption. The part that surprises people is that the figure is not fixed in law — the university sets it. Get your own number in writing from your institution's international office rather than from an agency, because two Cypriot universities can ask two different figures of two students starting the same month.

Does Cyprus require a blocked account like Germany?+

No. Cyprus has no blocked-account requirement: the money is evidenced through a bank letter and statement and stays in the account. Separately, a repatriation bank guarantee is required, and the university specifies its amount and format. That is not a blocked account either, but it is a distinct errand at a bank and it takes time, so start it early rather than in the final week.

Can the money sit in my father's account instead of mine?+

Yes, but then two documents have to travel with it: proof of your relationship, and proof of his own income. A balance in an account belonging to someone the file cannot connect you to proves nothing at all. The cleanest file has the money in the student's own name with a documented history of how it got there.

Why is a large deposit just before applying so damaging?+

Because it changes the question being asked. Before the deposit the question is whether you have enough; after it, the question is where a sum that size came from and why it arrived exactly then — and your file now has to answer that. The most common answer, that a relative lent it, makes things worse, because money you have to give back is not your capacity to pay.

Do I have to pay tuition before the visa is decided?+

Often a real part of the first year's tuition is payable in advance, because Cypriot higher education is dominated by private institutions and tuition there is a genuine price. That means money leaves Bangladesh before you know the outcome. Read the refund terms in the institution's own offer letter before you send anything, particularly what happens on a visa refusal.

Does Cyprus accept a Bangladeshi apostille?+

Yes. Bangladesh joined the Apostille Convention, in force 30 March 2025, and Cyprus accepts an apostille — unlike Denmark, Greece and Finland, which objected under Article 12 and still need the full consular legalisation chain. It shortens the document chain for financial papers too. It does not, however, explain your money: an apostille certifies a signature and seal, nothing about the funds behind them.

Can I travel around Europe at weekends on a Cyprus student permit?+

No, and it matters to your budget. Cyprus is in the EU but not in the Schengen area, so you receive a Cypriot national Category-D visa rather than a Schengen one. Students routinely budget for weekend trips the permit does not allow, then find the travel money was never usable for that purpose.

Can I earn the tuition back by working in the first semester?+

No. There is no right to work at all for the first six months, which is the first semester. After that it is 20 hours a week in named sectors, 38 during holidays, with the contract stamped at the labour department. Anyone telling you that you can work from day one in Cyprus is wrong, and planning around it is how first years go badly.

Is showing exactly EUR 7,000 enough?+

It can be enough on paper and is still risky in practice. An exact figure leaves no headroom, so a revised tuition instalment, a weaker taka or one unplanned expense leaves nothing in the plan. Where you can, evidence somewhat more than the requirement — and make sure the extra is as explicable as the rest.

Is money paid to a university in North Cyprus the same thing?+

No, and confusing the two is an expensive mistake. An institution in the north is not part of the Republic of Cyprus route into the EU, and recognition, the visa and everything that follows work differently there. Verify which authority recognises the institution and the specific programme before any money moves.
