What an affidavit is, mechanically
In Bangladesh an affidavit is a statement written on non-judicial stamp paper and sworn before a notary public, an oath commissioner or a first-class magistrate at the court. It costs a few hundred taka including the stamp, and it takes an hour.
What the notary certifies is that you swore it, not that it is true. That single distinction explains everything else in this article, and it is the difference between the three stamps described in notary, magistrate or MOFA.
Where it works and where it does not
| Use | Does an affidavit help |
|---|---|
| A sponsor confirming they will fund your studies | Yes — as a covering statement, alongside bank statements, income proof and a tax return |
| Declaring that two spellings are the same person | Often yes, when every other detail agrees |
| A parent consenting to a minor travelling | Yes, and frequently required |
| Confirming a relationship where records are thin | Sometimes, as supporting material |
| Proving that you have money | No. An affidavit is a statement; money is proved by statements from a bank |
| Replacing a marriage certificate | No. Missions want the registrar's record |
| Changing a date of birth | No, and it draws attention to the discrepancy |
| Explaining a study gap | No — write a signed letter and attach evidence of what you were doing |
The pattern is consistent. An affidavit explains documents that already agree with each other. It cannot substitute for a document that ought to exist, and it cannot contradict one that does.
The sponsor affidavit, which is the one that matters
Most Bangladeshi student files include a sponsorship declaration, usually from a parent or a sibling working abroad. Done well it is useful; done as a bare declaration it adds nothing and can cost you credibility.
A sponsor affidavit should state, plainly:
- 1Who the sponsor is, with their national ID or passport number.
- 2Their exact relationship to you.
- 3What they do, and where their income comes from.
- 4A specific amount, and for what period — not a promise to bear all expenses.
- 5Which programme, which university and which country.
- 6The date and the signature, sworn before the notary or magistrate.
And it should arrive attached to the things that make it credible: bank statements covering the period the mission asks for, the sponsor's income evidence, their tax identification number and return where they have one, and proof of the relationship. The document side of that is covered in sponsor letters and affidavits for student visas, the banking side in bank statements for a European student visa, and the tax side in TIN and tax returns for student visas.
⚠️ What gets a file refused
Four failure modes, all of which are visible to a visa officer immediately.
The affidavit contradicts a document. A sworn statement giving a date of birth that differs from the SSC certificate does not resolve the conflict; it puts a second, sworn version of it into the file. Fix the underlying record instead — fixing a name mismatch.
The affidavit stands alone. A declaration of substantial support with no bank evidence behind it reads as an attempt to substitute paper for money, and it makes the rest of the file look worse, not better. How missions actually test financial evidence is discussed in proof of funds.
The sponsor has no plausible standing. A distant relative or a family friend offering to fund a full degree invites a question about why. Where the relationship is genuine but unusual, explain it and evidence it rather than hoping nobody notices.
Money that appeared last month. An affidavit cannot explain a balance that arrived recently from nowhere. Missions look at the shape of an account over time, not just its closing figure, and the honest answer — a property sale, a retirement payment, a remittance history — has to be documented.
Format and language
Write it in English. There is no requirement that a Bangladeshi affidavit be in Bengali, and drafting in English from the start removes a translation, a notarial declaration and a step of attestation. Keep it to one page, in plain sentences, with the numbers written in figures and in words.
After swearing, expect the affidavit to go through the same chain as any other document destined for a foreign authority — the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then the destination mission — as described in the attestation and apostille guide. An unattested affidavit is often accepted by a university and much less often by an embassy.
A last word on tone
An affidavit is read by someone who reads hundreds of them. Superlatives, promises about your future conduct and declarations that you will certainly return home add nothing, because everybody writes them. Specific figures, a named relationship, a documented source of income and a page of supporting evidence do the work. What a visa officer is actually testing is set out in student visa interview questions.

Common questions
Is an affidavit enough to prove I have funds?+
No. An affidavit records that somebody swore a statement, not that the money exists. Financial capacity is proved by bank statements over the period the mission specifies, income evidence and a tax return. A sponsorship affidavit is a covering document that sits on top of that evidence, never a replacement for it.
What should a sponsor affidavit actually say?+
The sponsor's identity and national ID or passport number, their exact relationship to you, their occupation and source of income, a specific amount for a specific period, and the programme, university and country. A vague promise to bear all expenses is weaker than a figure, because a figure can be checked against a bank statement.
Should the affidavit be in Bengali or English?+
English. Nothing requires a Bangladeshi affidavit to be in Bengali, and drafting in English removes a translation, a translator's declaration and a step of attestation. Keep it to one page and write amounts in both figures and words.
Does an affidavit need to be attested?+
For an embassy, usually yes — the same chain as any other document going abroad, ending at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and then the destination mission. A university will often accept a notarised affidavit as it stands, but a visa file generally will not.
