How long a Malta student visa takes: the decision can arrive on time and still land too late

The short answer

Nobody publishes one. There is no service standard, no target and no promised window for a Maltese student long-stay visa, so this article gives no figure — and you should distrust any page that does.

What does exist is a legal ceiling. Malta is an EU member state, so Directive (EU) 2016/801 applies: a complete student application must be decided within a maximum of 90 days. Read both of those words carefully. It is a maximum, not an average. And it is measured from completeness, not from the moment you walk out of the visa application centre holding a receipt.

That leaves three things deciding how long your own file takes:

2. 2What the authority publishes as its own standard — for Malta, nothing
3. 3How fast you answer a request for a missing document — the only variable you control

Where the file actually goes, and who is holding it

Malta has no embassy in Dhaka, so the route carries one hand-off more than a country with a resident mission. The office that takes your papers is not the office that reads them.

Two consequences follow. Your wait depends on Malta's queue, not on how busy the Dhaka counter is. And an enquiry belongs with the Central Visa Unit, not with the staff who scanned your file. What starts the clock, and what quietly stops it

This table is the whole mechanism. Everything else in the article follows from it.

The misreading buried in that table is the expensive one. People submit, assume the 90 days has begun, and discover four months later that they have no grounds to complain, because a missing attestation meant the ceiling had never started running. The deadline did not slip. It had not been engaged.

So there is no way to buy a faster decision for Malta. There is only a way to buy an earlier start, and that is a file that is genuinely complete on the day it is handed over. Get the document chain finished before submission: attestation and apostille, collecting transcripts and certificates, the police clearance certificate, health insurance and what to carry to the appointment. Tracking reports custody, not progress

After submission you hold a receipt with a reference number, and the status can be checked online. Almost everyone treats that status as a progress bar. It is not one.

Tracking answers one question: where is the file — at the centre, in transit, or with the authority. It never says whether anyone has opened it, or how close a decision is. A status unchanged for three weeks is therefore neither a warning nor a reassurance. It is silence.

So check weekly rather than twice a day, and assume the decision reaches you by email or by the centre's message rather than by a status line changing. The one instruction that genuinely shortens the wait

If you read nothing else here: answer a request for a further document in days, not weeks.

When the authority asks for something, your file stops. They wait, and every day of that wait lands on your total. If producing a fresh bank statement or a certified translation in Bangladesh takes three weeks, you have added three weeks — not through anyone's failure, simply through distance.

Three habits make that response fast:

• Scans of every original in one named folder, on the phone and in email, so a request is a five-minute job rather than a week of collecting
• Check the email address on the application daily, spam folder included. It is the only channel that matters
• Do not change that email address or your phone number while a file is live, or the request will never reach you

The deadline that actually bites is the arrival date

Here is where Malta behaves differently from the other eight countries we work with, and it is the most useful paragraph on this page.

Teaching in Malta starts in October, with a second intake in February, so the academic year begins a month later than most of Europe. That reads as a month of slack. It is the opposite. Malta is a small island whose rental market also serves summer tourism, and an October arrival puts you in the market exactly when the season is ending and what remains is priced at its highest. Now add the rule people meet late: evidence of where you will live is part of the Malta file, not an arrival chore. That inverts the usual order. In most destinations housing is what you sort out once the visa arrives. In Malta a written arrangement is needed before you submit.

Put those together and you get the failure this article is named for. A decision can arrive comfortably inside any reasonable expectation and still be too late, because the room you viewed in May is gone by the week the visa lands. The decision date was never the binding one. The arrival date was.

What we deliberately do not publish

You will find pages quoting a tidy number of weeks for Malta. We are not adding one, because no Maltese authority publishes a figure for this visa. Observations help you plan; repeated back as a guarantee, they do damage.

Who should not take this route right now

• Anyone starting from nothing with the next October in mind. No offer, no seasoned bank statement, an unfinished document chain — that is a February application at best, and more often the following October.
• Anyone planning to find a room after landing. In Malta that is not merely uncomfortable, it does not work as a file.
• Anyone relying on early earnings. The first 90 days after arrival are a no-work period, and the route afterwards runs through the e-Residence card and a Jobsplus licence to 20 hours a week: student work rules in Malta. Budget the first months at zero income.
• Anyone choosing Malta only because English is an official language. It removes a language barrier. It does not reduce the money, shorten the queue or lower the academic bar — what Malta is actually good for and Cyprus versus Malta both make that comparison honestly.

What the wait costs while it runs

Time is not the only price. Malta counts funds per month of stay: EUR 950 for every month, roughly EUR 11,400 across a year, with no blocked account, so the money stays in an account you control. The Bangladesh-side spend for a single-country application is roughly BDT 2-4 lakh, with a one-way ticket at BDT 70,000 to 120,000, and none of it comes back on a refusal: what you spend before you even fly. That arithmetic is the real argument against submitting early with gaps: an incomplete file does not start the clock, so it buys nothing while risking what you have already spent. The honest summary

Malta publishes no processing time, so plan against the mechanism instead of a number: complete the file before you submit, because that is when the 90-day ceiling starts; treat tracking as custody rather than progress; answer any document request within days; and remember that in Malta the binding date is when you need to be on the island with somewhere to live, not when the decision lands. If the two are tight against each other, move the whole plan a cycle earlier rather than hoping the queue is kind.
