Why Malta appeals, and what it costs you
English is an official language of Malta, and the University of Malta teaches in it — not as a special international track, but as its ordinary language of instruction. For a Bangladeshi student that removes an entire category of problem: no local-language barrier at university, in the shops, at the bank or at a part-time job.
The price of that is genuine. Malta is small, tuition for non-EU students is substantial, accommodation is expensive for the size of the island, and the entry requirement is stricter than most applicants expect.
Entry and cost at a glance
| Item | Typical position | Authority |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor's entry | HSC assessed against the Matriculation Certificate standard | UM Admissions and Records |
| Where HSC falls short | One-year Foundation Studies Course, or completed university study | UM Foundation Studies |
| Master's entry | Recognised bachelor's, subject matched | Programme page |
| English | Commonly IELTS 6.0-6.5 | Admissions page |
| Tuition, non-EU bachelor's | Commonly around EUR 10,000-15,000 a year | UM fees table |
| Health and specialist programmes | Higher, published separately | UM fees table |
| Living costs | Roughly EUR 600-900 a month | Accommodation is the driver |
| Intakes | October, with a smaller February intake | Academic calendar |
The entry requirement, said plainly
⚠️ This is the part that surprises people. The University of Malta assesses your qualification against its General Entry Requirement, which is built around the Maltese Matriculation Certificate — a specific structure of advanced and intermediate subjects. A Bangladeshi HSC on its own is frequently assessed as not meeting it.
There are two standard outcomes when that happens:
- 1The Foundation Studies Course — a one-year programme run by the University specifically to bring international qualifications up to entry standard. It is a legitimate and well-trodden route, but it adds a year of fees and living costs to your total.
- 2Completed university study — applicants who have already passed one or more years of a recognised bachelor's degree in Bangladesh are often assessed differently.
Neither is a rejection. But budgeting for a three-year degree and being offered a four-year route is a EUR 15,000-plus surprise, and it is entirely predictable if you ask the admissions office to assess your qualification before you commit.
What it is genuinely strong in
Computer science and artificial intelligence, business and finance, engineering, digital arts and media, maritime and ocean sciences, and health sciences including medicine and dentistry. Malta's economy leans on financial services, digital gaming and maritime industries, and the university's programmes in those areas connect to local employers in a way a small university otherwise would not manage.
How you apply
- 1Ask Admissions and Records to assess your HSC or transcript before you plan a budget or a timeline.
- 2Apply online with certificates, transcripts, passport and English evidence within the published window.
- 3If directed to Foundation Studies, decide whether the extra year is worth it against a public university elsewhere in Europe.
- 4After an offer, apply for the study visa and residence — the sequence is in the Malta country guide and the funding evidence in proof of funds.
Scholarship options are limited compared with Italy or Hungary and are covered in Malta scholarship schemes explained.
The honest comparison
Malta buys you English. It does not buy you a cheap degree. For roughly what one year at the University of Malta costs, a student can complete most of a public Italian or Hungarian degree — and those countries also have larger job markets. What Malta offers in exchange is that you can actually work and live in English from your first week, which in Italy or Hungary you largely cannot.
That is a real trade and reasonable people choose either side of it. Price both before deciding, and read Cyprus versus Malta, which is the comparison most applicants are actually making.
⚠️ Medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and nursing are regulated professions. A Maltese degree in any of them is not a licence to practise in Malta, the EU or Bangladesh; each requires its own registration process.
Before you apply
- 1Get a written qualification assessment from Admissions and Records first — everything else depends on it.
- 2Price accommodation in Malta specifically; it is the item that breaks budgets there.
- 3Run the same subject through the cost calculator for Italy and Hungary before you commit.

Common questions
Is my HSC enough for the University of Malta?+
Often not on its own. The University assesses qualifications against its General Entry Requirement, which is built around the Maltese Matriculation Certificate, and a Bangladeshi HSC is frequently found short. Applicants are then directed to the one-year Foundation Studies Course or asked to show completed university study.
How much does the University of Malta cost for a non-EU student?+
Bachelor's tuition commonly runs around EUR 10,000-15,000 a year, with health and specialist programmes higher, and living costs of roughly EUR 600-900 a month on top. The university publishes a fees table by programme, and that is the figure to budget from.
Can I study in English in Malta without any local language?+
Yes. English is an official language of Malta and the university's ordinary language of instruction, so university life, daily life and part-time work all work in English. That is the main thing Malta offers over cheaper destinations such as Italy or Hungary.
