What a year in Malta costs

Malta is the only EU country on our list where English is an official language, so there is no second language to learn for study, work, housing or paperwork. That advantage is real, and it is priced in.

The three kinds of institution, and why it changes the fee

The University of Malta is the national public university. It publishes its international fees per course rather than as one figure, and it is the most competitive to enter - see the University of Malta guide. Its degree is a Maltese public-university degree.

Licensed private higher education institutions make up most of the Maltese market for international students. They are licensed and their programmes accredited by the Malta Further and Higher Education Authority (MFHEA), and many award their own Maltese-accredited qualifications while some deliver a partner university's degree. Fees typically sit below the University of Malta's.

MCAST, the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology, is the vocational and applied route, and its fees are usually the lowest of the three.

⚠️ The licence is the thing to verify, not the marketing. MFHEA maintains a public register of licensed providers and accredited programmes. If an institution is not on it, the qualification is not a Maltese accredited one, whatever the prospectus says. The payment schedule is the real cost

Here is what students underestimate about Malta. Many institutions require the full first-year tuition paid before they issue the documents the visa file needs, rather than a deposit. On a EUR 8,000 fee, that is EUR 8,000 committed before an embassy has seen your application - and it sits alongside the EUR 11,400 you must separately evidence in a bank account.

Those two requirements do not offset each other. The tuition is money you spend; the EUR 950 a month is money you show. A family that can raise EUR 11,400 but has already sent EUR 8,000 to Malta has a problem the fee table never mentioned.

Three questions to put to the institution in writing before paying:

1. 1Is the full year required, or is an instalment schedule available?
2. 2What is refunded if the visa is refused, and how long does the refund take?
3. 3Is the tuition receipt itself part of the visa file, or is a letter enough?

Send the money through a proper student file at your bank, never through a personal transfer or an intermediary's account.

What the fee does and does not include

Included almost everywhere: tuition, registration, examination and access to the library and campus facilities.

Not included, and each of these is a real line in a Maltese year:

• Health insurance required for the visa, typically EUR 300-600 a year
• The national long-stay visa fee and, after arrival, the e-Residence card, both published by Identita
• Accommodation, which the visa file requires you to have confirmed before you fly
• Books, materials and, on applied programmes, equipment

One genuine saving on the other side: public transport is free for residents holding a personal Tallinja card, which removes a line that costs EUR 30-55 a month in the Nordic cities. Confirm your own eligibility as a student resident with Malta Public Transport when you register.

Can you work to cover it?

Not in the first three months. Malta permits students 20 hours a week after a qualifying period, normally around 13 weeks. Because the economy runs in English, the work is genuinely reachable once you qualify - which is not true in Finland or Sweden - but the first term has no income in it at all. Treat earnings as relief on the budget rather than a line in it, and read the part-time work rules before assuming otherwise.

Is Malta worth the fee?

That depends on what you are buying. Against Hungary or Bulgaria, Malta costs roughly double and you get an English-speaking EU country where part-time work is actually accessible. Against Finland or Denmark, it costs less and the graduate job market is much smaller - Malta is a country of half a million people, concentrated in finance, iGaming, tourism, maritime and IT.
