There is no full Maltese embassy in Bangladesh, but Malta's visa system is centralised in a way that makes that less important than it sounds: the Central Visa Unit in Malta processes applications, and outsourced branches abroad take them in.

Why you will see a different address

Commercial listings frequently give a Gulshan address for Malta applications instead. Both can be true at different times: VFS Global runs more than one centre in Dhaka, centres relocate, and client governments move between them. This is not a detail to resolve by reading more agency pages.

The rule is simple: the address on your own appointment confirmation is the correct one. Read it the night before, not in a taxi. If it disagrees with what you expected, ring the centre's published helpline before you travel.

What kind of visa this is

A student going to Malta for a full programme needs a national long-stay visa, not a short-stay Schengen visa, and the residence document itself is issued in Malta after arrival. Malta is in the EU and in Schengen, so once you hold the Maltese residence permit the usual Schengen travel rules apply to you.

The distinction between the two visa types decides which form you fill and which fee you pay: national type D versus Schengen type C.

What Malta looks at

• The institution and the programme. Malta has a licensing regime for education providers, and a licensed provider is the starting point rather than a nice-to-have. Check the licence, not the brochure.
• Money. Tuition and living costs are real and the funds evidence has to cover the period. Build the number honestly and document it the way proof of funds describes.
• Health insurance for the whole stay.
• Attestation. Malta accepts a Bangladeshi apostille, so the chain is shorter than for Denmark, Greece or Finland: which countries refuse a Bangladeshi apostille.

The timing problem

Malta's long-stay processing is not fast, and the constraint is usually the combination of a centralised unit and a small island's caseload. Two practical rules follow:

1. 1Do not book flights against an expected decision date. Nothing about a national visa timeline is a promise, and the correct response to a long wait is one written enquiry through the official channel, not a weekly one.
2. 2Submit as early as the institution's letter allows. The morning-only counter hours in Dhaka mean the practical appointment supply is narrower than the working week suggests.

The accommodation question

Malta pays more attention to where you will live than most of our nine, and the reason is not bureaucratic fussiness. The island is small, the rental market is tight and seasonal, and an arriving student with no address is a real problem rather than a theoretical one.

Practically, that means: secure something before you fly, get it in writing, and do not accept a listing that will not put an address and a period on paper. Prices move sharply between the summer tourist season and the rest of the year, so a quote taken in April may not hold in September. After the visa: the residence card

The long-stay visa gets you to Malta. The residence document is issued there, by the identity agency, once you have arrived and applied — and it, not the visa, is what governs how long you may stay, whether you may work, and under what conditions. Budget time for the appointment and money for the fee, and treat the visa expiry date as a travel deadline rather than the end of your permission.

Before you go to the counter

Take the file, the photocopies, the photographs to specification, and the fee in the accepted form. What gets people turned away is almost never the substance: it is a missing copy or a photo that fails the specification. What to carry to your visa appointment is the packing list, and the photograph specification is worth five minutes of your evening rather than a wasted morning.

Where Malta sits among the nine

It is worth holding two facts together. Malta is administratively easy to apply for from Dhaka, because the counter is here and the language of instruction is English. It is also small, expensive per square metre of housing, and slow to decide. Students who are drawn to it by the first pair of facts and surprised by the second pair are the ones who end up rebooking flights.

Compare it against the other eight on cost and timing before you commit, and read the fee and living figures from the institution and the government rather than from a brochure.
