Malta's intakes and deadlines: the October start that does not buy you an extra month

The short answer

Malta runs two intakes. The main one begins in October, and a second one begins in February. There is no national admissions portal and no national closing date, so the academic deadline that binds you is the one your own institution publishes on its programme page.

Fix the October date in your head first, because everything else in this plan is measured from it. Most of Europe teaches from September, so every generic study-abroad calendar you will read is built around September. Malta is a month behind that, and one month later reads like one month more. It is the most expensive misreading in a Malta plan, and the rest of this article is mostly about why.

Four clocks, and only one of them moves with the intake

ClockWho publishes itDoes an October start move it later?
Your institution's application deadlineThe university or licensed provider, on its own pageYes, roughly with the teaching calendar
Your money's historyNobody. A bank statement simply has to ageNo. It takes the months it takes
The visa decisionNo authority promises a date. Malta is in the EU, so a complete file has a legal maximum of 90 daysNo. It is a length, not a position
The room you will live inNobody at allIt moves the wrong way. See below

Three of those four are fixed lengths. You cannot compress a bank history, you cannot hurry a centralised visa unit, and you cannot negotiate with a rental market. When the teaching date sits a month later than Europe's, only the first row slides with it. The others stay exactly as long as they were.

That is the whole argument. An October start gives you a later beginning, not a longer run-up.

Working backwards from an October start

Count backwards from the first day of teaching, never forwards from today. And read the third column: some of these are dates somebody publishes, and the rest are our planning advice. Treating our advice as a published deadline is careless; treating a published deadline as advice costs you the year.

The step-by-step of the visa file itself, including how long Malta's long-stay processing actually runs, is in study in Malta from Bangladesh and the Malta visa route from Dhaka. The document chain behind the fourth and fifth rows is in document attestation and apostille, collecting transcripts and certificates and the police clearance certificate. Malta accepts a Bangladeshi apostille, which has been in force since 30 March 2025 and shortens that chain considerably; three of our nine countries refuse it, and Malta is not one of them.

The row people underestimate: the money's age

Malta counts funds per month of stay. It asks for EUR 950 for every month you will be there, which comes to about EUR 11,400 across a year, and there is no blocked account anywhere in the process. Against that, tuition of EUR 5,000-11,000 a year and living costs of EUR 600-900 a month are the numbers your budget has to carry; what studying in Malta costs and tuition fees in Malta break both of those down.

The deadline hidden in that paragraph is not the amount. It is the age of the account. A statement is read as a history: where the money came from, when it arrived, whether it behaves like a family's savings or like a sum borrowed for a photograph. That history cannot be created in a fortnight, which is why the funds row sits five to seven months before teaching starts rather than next to the visa appointment. Getting a bank statement in Bangladesh covers what to ask for at the counter, and proof of funds and education loans and show money cover where the money may honestly come from.

The second deadline nobody publishes: the room

This is the part of the Malta calendar that no university, no ministry and no visa centre will ever put a date on, and it is the one that most often turns a late plan into a failed one.

Malta is a small island. Its rental market serves summer tourism as well as students, so rent rises through the summer and a lease signed in September costs more than the same room in February. An October intake therefore lands you in the worst possible position: you are searching at the end of the tourist season, for what the summer did not take, at the top of the annual price curve.

Two consequences follow, and they are not the same one twice.

The first is financial. Living in Malta as a student sets out what Msida and the surrounding towns actually cost; a longer lease and a shared room are the two levers that genuinely move that number, and dormitory, private flat or shared room weighs them properly.

The second is procedural, and it surprises people. Evidence of where you will live is part of the Malta file, not a chore for after you land. So the housing search is not a task that can be postponed until the visa arrives, because the visa partly depends on it. Agree something in writing, with an address and a period on paper, months before you fly, and read rental scams and deposits before you send anyone money from Dhaka. Student accommodation in Europe is the general version of that advice.

The February intake, honestly

February is a real second start, and for a student whose HSC result came late or whose IELTS needs one more attempt it is genuinely useful rather than a consolation prize. But it is not a late application. It is an earlier deadline for a later start.

February intakeThe honest picture
When you applyNormally the previous autumn, only months after the October round closed
How much runsA subset of the catalogue. Your exact programme may not run in the spring
ScholarshipsThe large schemes are generally tied to the main cycle
HousingThe one genuine advantage. February is the cheaper end of the seasonal market
GraduationOut of phase with the main cohort, which affects electives and placements

If you are reading about the February intake in December and expecting to fly in February, you are almost certainly looking at the February after next. The spring intake and who it suits is the cross-country version of this, and Malta's scholarship schemes explains which funding is tied to which cycle.

If it is now this month, here is what is actually open

This is the section nobody writes, and it is the one you can act on. Read it against the month you are actually in.

If it is nowThe coming OctoberThe February after
January to FebruaryRealistic. This is the right time to be applyingDistant. Time to prepare properly
March to AprilStill realistic if IELTS is done and funds existRealistic
May to JuneAt risk. Only if the offer is already in handThe honest target
July to AugustGone, for anyone starting from nothingRealistic, if the documents are already moving
September to OctoberNot availableThe window may still be open, but only with everything in hand
November to DecemberNot availableNormally closed. Aim at the next October

If a month in that table says gone and somebody is telling you otherwise, ask them which of the four clocks they intend to shorten and how. There is no honest answer, because three of them cannot be shortened at all.

The test for waiting a full cycle

Rushing does not produce a fast file. It produces a weak one, and a weak file is how funds documents get assembled badly and refused. Wait for the next cycle if any two of these are true.

  1. 1Your English score is not in hand. Programmes in Malta typically look for around IELTS 6.0, and 6.0 to 6.5 at master's level. A test date plus results plus a possible retake does not fit inside a closing round; how long an IELTS score stays valid and IELTS fees and test dates in Bangladesh are the arithmetic.
  2. 2The money arrived recently. Three or four more months of statements is a materially stronger file than a rushed one.
  3. 3The document chain has not started. Transcripts, attestation and police clearance each sit in a different queue, and each has its own validity period.
  4. 4You have no accommodation and no realistic route to one. On this island, that is not a detail.
  5. 5A scholarship is what makes the plan affordable. Funding rounds do not wait for a late applicant.

The cost of getting this wrong is concrete rather than theoretical. Bangladesh-side spend on a single-country application runs to roughly BDT 2-4 lakh before anyone boards a plane, and none of it is refunded on a refusal: what you spend before you even fly itemises it, and what to change in a second application is the article you will need if you go anyway and it does not work.

Who this calendar is wrong for

If your subject is not taught in Malta, the calendar is irrelevant and so is the country. The higher-education sector is compact, concentrated in business and finance, IT and gaming, hospitality, blockchain and fintech, and English-language teaching. Check the subject exists before you check anything else: the University of Malta and what Malta is actually good for are the honest versions of that question, and Cyprus versus Malta is worth reading if the attraction is really that both operate in English.

It is also the wrong calendar if you are counting on part-time earnings to fund the first semester. The first 90 days after arrival are a no-work period, and the route after that runs through the e-Residence card and a Jobsplus employment licence, at up to 20 hours a week once the conditions, usually 13 weeks, are met. Working 20 hours a week in Malta sets out what that does and does not mean.

What nobody can tell you, including us

There is no national deadline to look up, so next year's real dates live in exactly two places: your institution's programme page and, for the visa half, Identita and the VFS Malta centre in Bangladesh. Any page stating a confident date for a future year has invented it.

What we can tell you is the shape. October, not September. February, applied for in the autumn. Four clocks, three of them fixed. And a housing deadline that nobody publishes and everybody discovers late.

Work backwards from the teaching date, start with the clock you cannot shorten, and if the honest answer is next year, that is still a plan. The application timeline for Bangladeshi students and the timeline from offer to boarding pass cover the two halves in more detail.

Common questions

When does the academic year start in Malta?+

The main intake begins in October, and there is a second intake in February. October is the detail worth fixing in your head, because most of Europe teaches from September and almost every generic study-abroad calendar you will read online is built around September. Your own institution publishes the exact teaching date and the application deadline that goes with it, and those are the only two dates that bind you.

Is there a national application deadline for Malta?+

No. Malta has no central admissions portal and no single national closing date, so the deadline is set institution by institution and published on the programme page. That is genuinely different from Finland or Sweden, where one portal governs one national round. It also means any page that gives you a confident national deadline for next year is guessing, because there is nothing to be confident about.

If teaching starts in October, can I apply in the summer?+

Almost never, and this is the single most expensive mistake in a Malta plan. The academic deadline moves with the teaching calendar, but the three things behind it do not: a bank statement takes months to build a history, a centralised visa unit takes the time it takes, and the rental market is at its tightest and most expensive in the summer. A summer application is usually an application for the following year.

Is the February intake a real alternative or just a later start?+

It is real, but it is not a late application. A February start is normally applied for in the previous autumn, so if you find it in December you are most likely looking at the February after next, not the one coming. The catalogue is also smaller, so check your specific programme actually runs in the spring semester rather than assuming the intake covers everything.

Why does accommodation have a deadline of its own in Malta?+

Because Malta is a small island with a rental market that also serves summer tourism, and because evidence of where you will live belongs in the visa file rather than being something you sort out after landing. Those two facts combine badly for an October arrival: you are signing at the top of the seasonal market for what the summer did not take. Agree something in writing months before you fly.

How much money do I need to show, and when should it be in the account?+

Malta counts funds per month of stay: EUR 950 for every month, which comes to about EUR 11,400 across a year, and no blocked account is involved. The timing matters as much as the amount, because a statement is read as a history rather than a photograph. Money that arrives in a lump the week before submission raises exactly the question you do not want asked.

When can I start working in Malta?+

Not on arrival. The first 90 days after you land are a no-work period, and after that the route runs through your e-Residence card and an employment licence through Jobsplus, at up to 20 hours a week once the conditions, usually 13 weeks, are met. Plan the first months of your budget at zero income, whatever anyone tells you about finding work in an English-speaking economy.

It is already July and I want the coming October. Is it possible?+

Honestly, usually not, unless you already hold an offer, have paid what the provider requires, have a seasoned bank statement and are booking the visa appointment rather than starting the file. Starting from nothing in July means the February intake at the earliest, and more often the following October. Being told that early is worth more than being told what you want to hear.

Does a February start change anything about the degree itself?+

Yes, in ways worth checking before you accept a place. You graduate out of phase with the main cohort, some elective modules run only once a year in the other semester, and summer placements assume you have finished two semesters by then. None of that makes a February start wrong. It makes it something to ask the programme coordinator about directly, because it rarely appears in a prospectus.

Is it ever better to wait a full year?+

Often, yes. If the English score, the funds history or the document chain is not ready, rushing produces a weak file rather than a fast one, and the Bangladesh-side spend of roughly BDT 2-4 lakh is not refunded when a file is refused. Waiting one cycle to submit a strong file is cheaper than submitting twice, and a refusal is also a fact you carry into the next application.
