Who Malta genuinely suits
The student who does not want to learn a second language to survive. This is the whole argument, and it is underrated because it does not look like a feature. English is an official language of Malta alongside Maltese. That means the lecture is in English, but so is the rental contract, the bank form, the residence-permit office, the doctor and the shift manager at the job you apply for. Compare that with Italy, Hungary or Finland, where the degree is in English and everything around it is not.
The student who actually needs the part-time job to happen. Because the economy runs in English, and because tourism and services are a large share of it, student work in Malta is genuinely reachable rather than technically permitted. That is not true in most of the nine. It still will not pay your tuition — see the part-time work rules — but it changes the monthly budget in a way it does not in Budapest.
The student aiming at a specific Maltese industry. Financial services, iGaming, tourism and hospitality management, maritime studies and IT are where Malta has real employers and real depth. If your field is one of those, the small country works in your favour: the sector is close, the internships are local, and you are not one of forty thousand students.
The student who wants a short, mild, safe first year abroad. Small island, low crime, Mediterranean climate, one hour from most of southern Europe, and both EU and Schengen membership so the residence permit carries full travel rights.
What it costs, and where the EUR 11,400 comes from
Malta does not publish a single annual funds figure. It asks for EUR 950 for each month you will be in the country, which is about EUR 11,400 across a twelve-month stay. Two details catch people out. It must be evidenced with a bank statement showing the last three months of transactions — a certificate showing only a closing balance is not accepted — and there is no blocked account, so the money is shown rather than frozen.
| Item | Typical, one year |
|---|---|
| Tuition | EUR 5,000-11,000 |
| Living | EUR 7,200-10,800 |
| Funds to evidence | About EUR 11,400 |
| Health insurance and permit fees | Several hundred euros |
That funds figure is higher than Hungary, Greece or Bulgaria and lower than Denmark. If money is the binding constraint, Malta is not the answer.
What day-to-day Malta looks like
Malta is one urban area with several names. Most students end up in the belt around Msida, Gzira, Sliema and San Gwann, close to the University of Malta campus, and almost everything else on the island is a bus ride rather than a move.
Rent is the dominant cost, and it is set by a market that also serves tourists and remote workers, so a lease signed in September costs more than the same room in February. Start looking early, and share: a room in a shared flat is a fraction of a one-bedroom.
Transport is buses. There is no metro and no train. Budget for the fact that a shift on the other side of the island is a genuine commute, and weigh that before you accept one. The city-level picture is in studying in Malta.
Do not choose Malta if
- 1Your field is specialised. Malta's higher-education sector is compact. Before you build any plan around it, confirm your subject is actually taught here — start with the University of Malta catalogue.
- 2You are on the tightest budget. Tuition, living costs and the funds requirement are all above the Southern and Central European options.
- 3You expect to work from week one. A qualifying period of roughly 13 weeks applies first.
- 4You want a guaranteed runway after graduation. Malta has no long defined job-seeking permit of the kind Denmark, Finland or Sweden offer. Post-study work is real but goes through an employer and a work permit.
- 5You want variety. It is one small island. If you dislike the university, the programme or the city, there is not another one an hour away.
What to do next
Read the Malta country guide for the numbers with their sources, then check whether your subject exists on the island at all before anything else. If the appeal is mainly the English-language environment, put Malta next to Cyprus — the two are close on that point and far apart on Schengen and on cost.

Common questions
Is English really enough for daily life in Malta?+
Yes. English is an official language of Malta alongside Maltese, so administration, healthcare, banking, rental agreements and most workplaces operate in English. This is genuinely different from studying an English-taught degree in Italy or Hungary, where the course is in English and everything outside the classroom is not.
How much money does the Malta visa file need?+
EUR 950 for each month you will be in Malta, which is about EUR 11,400 for a full year, evidenced with a bank statement showing the last three months of transactions. A balance certificate on its own is not accepted, and Malta does not require a blocked account.
Can I stay and work in Malta after I graduate?+
Post-study work is possible but it is conditional and normally requires an employer to sponsor a work permit, rather than an automatic job-seeking period. If a guaranteed runway after graduation is central to your plan, Denmark's three years, Finland's two and Sweden's twelve months are structurally stronger.
