Studying nursing in Sweden from Bangladesh: we could not confirm an English-taught route

In short: Sweden teaches nursing in Swedish. We could not confirm an English-taught nursing degree in Sweden open to non-EU applicants, and we will not imply one exists. Separately from studying, only Socialstyrelsen — the national authority for health professionals — decides whether a Bangladeshi nursing qualification is recognised and whether you may work as a nurse. We hold no verified figure for what that decision requires.

Three questions, and the damage comes from merging them

Almost every conversation about nursing in Sweden collapses three separate questions into one. Different bodies decide them, and clearing one tells you nothing about the next.

Question one: can you study nursing in Sweden?

Start with the fact that decides it. At Swedish universities most bachelor programmes are taught mainly in Swedish and require Swedish proficiency. Lund University states exactly that on its own admissions page: most of its bachelor programmes are mainly in Swedish, as at most universities in Sweden, and exactly ten are taught entirely in English and open to eligible international students. Against that background a nursing degree is the least likely exception, and not for administrative reasons. Nursing is assessed on a hospital ward. You take a history from a frightened patient, read a drug chart and hand over at shift change, all in the language the ward runs in. No faculty can place a student who cannot do that, whatever a brochure says.

Our finding, stated plainly: we could not confirm a nursing degree in Sweden that is taught in English and open to non-EU applicants. We are not claiming none can exist; we are telling you we have not verified one and will not point you at a route we cannot show you. That is more useful than a confident yes, because a confident yes is what costs families a year.

Check the whole country yourself

Sweden is unusually easy to verify: it has one national catalogue rather than forty separate ones. Every application goes through universityadmissions.se, which also lists the programmes. Search it for nursing at the level you want, with the language set to English. Whatever it returns for the coming round is the real answer, and more current than any article, this one included. If it returns nothing, you have the country's answer from the source. Confirm the teaching language on the programme page too, because marketing and timetable do not always agree.

If you are willing to study in Swedish

Then Sweden is open to you in principle, and the language stops being a caveat and becomes the entry requirement. Swedish proficiency is verified before admission, not picked up afterwards. Anyone telling you to arrive first and learn later has misunderstood what an admission requirement is — see English-taught or local-language programmes.

Three mechanics of the Swedish system bite harder here than for any other subject.

• One application, four ranked choices, at most one offer. Almost every Swedish university admits through that one portal, so applying widely to improve your odds is not available to you — see Sweden's entry requirements.
• The round closes in mid-January for the August and September intake, and the next one is a year later (Sweden's intakes and deadlines).
• A Bangladeshi MOI letter will not rescue the file. Most Swedish universities reject it, which makes IELTS effectively compulsory — around 6.0 at bachelor level and 6.5 at master's on the files we handle, which is our observation and not a national rule. Question two: is a Bangladeshi nursing qualification recognised in Sweden?

This is usually the real question, and it is not an admissions question at all. Two kinds of recognition exist, granted by two different bodies, and they are constantly confused.

We hold no verified figure for what Socialstyrelsen requires of a Bangladeshi-trained nurse, how many stages the process has, or how long it takes. We will not estimate any of them: a guessed timeline is the kind of thing a family plans a year around. One thing we can say, because it is arithmetic rather than a ruling: on the academic side a four-year Bangladeshi bachelor maps to roughly 240 ECTS credits and travels well, while a three-year one sits at roughly 180 and is the problem case — three-year versus four-year degrees. A nursing diploma is a different document again, and should never be called a bachelor when you ask anyone about it.

The sentence to refuse is short: nobody except Socialstyrelsen can tell you your qualification is accepted in Sweden. Not a consultancy, not an agent, not an article. If you are told otherwise, ask which authority decided it and on what date, then watch what happens.

Question three: could you work as a nurse in Sweden?

Registration with Socialstyrelsen, plus Swedish. That is the whole answer, and neither half arrives with a degree.

On the level of Swedish we will be careful rather than confident. Our cross-Europe nursing guide gives roughly B2 to C1 as the working expectation across this market, which is an observation of practice, not a rule we have read on the regulator's page. The practical point survives: patient-facing nursing in Sweden happens in Swedish, so the language is the centre of the plan, not an accessory.

Sweden's own professions show the pattern. Becoming a licensed psychologist there runs through the Swedish-language programme, supervised practice and the same authority's approval, and an English-taught master's is not its entry — psychology and social work are regulated on the same logic.

Two further facts belong beside the licence, because they decide whether the plan pays off. A study permit is not a work permit (the unvarnished version). And ordinary study years do not count towards permanent residence in Sweden — only working years do — while citizenship now follows eight years of residence. Graduating gives you a 12-month job-seeking residence permit: real and useful, and the first step of a long path rather than the end of one.

Care assistant work is not nursing

This is where people are taken advantage of, so it gets its own heading. Care assistant work is a different job, with a different qualification and permit, and it is not a stage on the way to a nursing licence. If what you are offered does not mention registration with Socialstyrelsen, it is not nursing, whatever it is called.

The route that does exist, and what it is not

Sweden's English-taught provision is at master's level, and that is where a Bangladeshi nursing graduate has something genuine to consider: a taught master's in a health-related field, on the transcript you already hold. Whether a given programme accepts your qualification is a question for the catalogue and the department — master's study in Sweden and the programme finder.

Be exact about what that is worth. A master's is a study route: not a licence, it does not register you as a nurse, and it should never be sold as one. If your goal is a Swedish nursing licence, ask Socialstyrelsen first and decide about study second — that order is the difference between a plan and a hope. If your goal is healthcare rather than nursing specifically, public health and pharmacy admit on the record you hold and need no licence.

The money, which does not change for nursing

Sweden's real currency is the krona, so the euro figures are approximate conversions. There is no blocked account — you show the monthly amount in your own account — but a fee-paying student must pay the first tuition instalment before the permit application can be made at all, so a large sum leaves the family before anyone knows the outcome. Work will not close the gap. A limit of 15 hours a week during term took effect on 11 June 2026, relaxed over the summer and for university-related work, and exceeding it can cost you the permit (student work rules in Sweden) — and a timetable built around hospital placements does not leave those hours free anyway. Who should not plan on Sweden for nursing

• Anyone who already holds a Bangladeshi nursing qualification and wants to work rather than study. That is a recognition question for Socialstyrelsen, not a student route. Arriving as a student and assuming the licence sorts itself out later is the version of this plan that fails most often.
• Anyone whose budget needs part-time earnings. Fifteen hours a week against 750 to 1,100 euro a month does not work, and a clinical timetable does not leave those hours.
• Anyone who has been sold caregiver work as nursing. Different job, different permit, no licence at the end of it.
• Anyone relying on an MOI letter instead of IELTS. Most Swedish universities reject it, and the round closes in mid-January whether your test is booked or not.
