Bringing family to Finland as a student: how the application works

Finland and Sweden are the two countries of our nine where bringing a spouse or child on a student permit is a documented process rather than a rumour. Finland's version is workable, slow, and decided almost entirely on money.

Why Finland has a route at all

Since 2022 a degree student in Finland is normally granted a continuous residence permit covering the duration of the studies, rather than a short temporary permit renewed annually. A permit of that type is what makes a family application coherent: there is something long enough for a family member's permit to attach to. That single change is why the Finnish answer differs from the Italian or Maltese one.

Who can apply, and who does the applying

The important structural point: the family member is the applicant, not you. They complete the application, they pay the fee, and they attend the identity appointment at the mission or service point that handles Finland for applicants in Bangladesh — Finland has no embassy in Dhaka, so check which office serves you before booking anything (countries with no embassy in Dhaka and where to submit your visa, Dhaka or Delhi).

The income test is the whole application

Migri publishes an income requirement and applies it to the whole household. As a working shape of the numbers: the student's own requirement has been in the region of EUR 800 a month, and a spouse adds roughly EUR 550 to 610 a month on top, varying by municipality, with several hundred more per child. For a couple that is upwards of EUR 16,000 evidenced for the first year, and it must be money available to you — not a sponsor's undertaking, not a property valuation, not a loan sanction letter without disbursement.

Can the spouse work?

A residence permit granted on the basis of family ties in Finland normally carries the right to work without a separate permit. Ask Migri to confirm it for the exact permit your spouse is issued, and keep the answer in writing — the type of permit granted determines the right, and it is not something to assume from a forum post. Whether they will find work is a separate question with a harder answer. Outside a handful of English-speaking sectors in Helsinki, Tampere and Turku, most jobs expect Finnish. Do not build the household budget on a second income in year one.

Time, and what it costs you to be late

Family applications carry a statutory maximum processing time of nine months, and Migri publishes its own current estimates, which are usually shorter but not short. Two practical consequences:

1. 1File as early as the rules allow. If the family application starts after you have already moved, arrival is a year away, not a semester.
2. 2A family member's permit cannot outlast yours. If your student permit ends, theirs ends. A late family application against a permit with eighteen months left is worth less than it looks.

The documents that actually stall these files

• The marriage certificate. Finland objected to Bangladesh's apostille under Article 12, so an apostille is not the route — the full consular legalisation chain still applies. • Name spellings that differ between the nikahnama, the passports and the application. Fix on the Bangladesh side first: fixing a name mismatch.
• Accommodation that has not been arranged. A family needs a flat, not a room in a shared student house, and Finnish student housing for families is limited and waitlisted.
• Health insurance priced per person rather than assumed to be covered by your own — health insurance for a European student visa.

Honest planning advice

The pattern that works is: go alone for the first semester, register with the municipality, get your identity number and a bank account, secure family-suitable housing, then file with real documents rather than projections.
