Your spouse's right to work, country by country

Start here: there is no EU-wide rule

The EU directive that governs students and researchers gives family reunification rights to researchers. Students are treated differently, and the decision is left to each country's own law. That is why the answers below diverge so much, and why anyone who tells you "in Europe your wife can come and work" is describing a country rather than a continent — and often not one of ours.

What each of the nine allows

⚠️ Confirm every one of these with the authority itself before you make a plan around it. Family migration is the fastest-changing area of European immigration law, several of these countries have tightened it in the last two years, and a rule that held for a friend two years ago may not hold for you. This table tells you where to ask and roughly what to expect; it is not a decision.

The two things that actually block applications

Maintenance. Every country that allows this requires you to show you can support your spouse without public funds, on top of your own maintenance requirement. Sweden publishes a monthly figure per family member and revises it; Italy sets an income threshold tied to the social allowance and adds increments per family member. A student living on a scholarship or a family transfer usually cannot meet it, which is why the practical answer is often no even where the legal answer is yes.

Housing. Italy also requires a certificate that the accommodation is suitable for the number of occupants, issued by the municipality. A room in a shared flat does not qualify. This alone stops most student applications.

The honest advice

Even where it is possible, think carefully.

1. 1A spouse who cannot work is expensive and isolated. They cannot study without their own permit, cannot work without labour-market access, and in the countries where the answer is "verify", the realistic outcome is a year at home in a flat in a foreign city with no language. That is a hard year for both of you.
2. 2The proof-of-funds requirement goes up, sometimes substantially, and it is assessed on you.
3. 3Health insurance is per person, and family cover on a student policy is not always available.
4. 4Housing costs move from a room to a flat. In most of these cities that is a doubling.

If you are going to apply

1. 1Read the authority's own page for your exact permit type. Not a forum, not an agent's page, not this one.
2. 2Get the marriage certificate legalised and translated correctly — this is where most applications stall, and the requirements are in marriage certificates and dependant documents.
3. 3Calculate the maintenance requirement for two people before you apply, and be honest with yourself about whether the evidence exists.
4. 4Ask specifically, in writing, whether the permit your spouse would receive carries the right to work. Get the answer from the authority, and keep it.
5. 5Read bringing your spouse and family to Europe as a student for the document chain.
