Start with the harder question
Before assembling any of this, be clear about what is actually possible. Most European countries do not let a student bring a spouse and children at the same time as they arrive, and several restrict family accompaniment to master's and doctoral students, to students with a residence permit already in hand, or to those who can show substantial additional funds on top of their own maintenance requirement.
So the realistic sequence in most cases is: you go, you get your residence permit, and then a family application is made from that position. The country-by-country picture is in bringing your spouse and family to Europe as a student.
That does not mean you should leave the paperwork. The attestation chain is the same length whether the family travels in month one or month fourteen, and it is far easier to run while you are still in Dhaka.
What a registered Bangladeshi marriage produces
| Document | Issued by | What has to happen before it can be used abroad |
|---|---|---|
| Nikahnama, for a Muslim marriage | The Nikah registrar for the area where the marriage was registered | A certified copy from the registrar, then an English certificate or a certified translation, then the attestation chain |
| Registration certificate under the Hindu marriage law | The Hindu marriage registrar | The same route |
| Certificate under the Special Marriage law | The registrar | The same route |
| A child's birth certificate | The local registrar, through the national register | Must be the 17-digit online-verifiable version naming both parents |
| Consent affidavit, where a child travels with one parent | Sworn before a notary or magistrate | Attested along with everything else |
⚠️ An affidavit of marriage is not a marriage certificate
This is the expensive misunderstanding, and it is common enough to be worth stating flatly. A court affidavit in which two people declare they are married is a statement. A registered marriage certificate is a record held by a state registrar, which a foreign authority can ask to have verified.
European missions want the second. A file built on the first tends to come back, and by then the appointment slot is gone. If a marriage was performed but never registered, the fix is to register it with the appropriate registrar, not to swear a stronger affidavit. What affidavits are genuinely for is set out in affidavits that embassies actually accept.
Getting it into a usable state
- 1Obtain a certified copy from the registrar who holds the register. A photocopy of a Nikahnama you keep at home is not a certified copy.
- 2Ask whether the registrar issues an English marriage certificate. Many do, and having one saves a translation and one step of attestation. If not, arrange a certified translation — the rules on who counts as certified are in certified translation in Dhaka.
- 3Run the attestation chain. A marriage certificate is a civil document, so it is verified by the office that issued it rather than by an education board, and then goes on to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the destination mission. The consular section publishes its current requirement for each document type, and it is worth reading rather than assuming — the difference between a notary stamp and real attestation is explained in notary, magistrate or MOFA.
- 4Check every name. The spelling on the marriage certificate must match both passports. A mismatch here has the same consequences as anywhere else, and the same fix: fixing a name mismatch.
Children
A child's file rests on the birth certificate, and it has to be the digital, online-verifiable one with 17 digits, showing both parents by their full legal names as they appear on the parents' passports. An older handwritten certificate cannot be verified abroad and is effectively useless — see the 17-digit digital birth certificate.
Two further pieces come up regularly:
- A passport for the child. Built from the birth record rather than from an NID, so any error in the birth registration propagates straight into the passport.
- A consent affidavit where one parent is travelling with the child and the other is not. Missions and airlines both ask for this, and it should be sworn, translated if needed, and attested with the rest of the bundle.
Money follows people
Every additional family member raises the maintenance figure a mission expects to see, sometimes substantially, and the evidence has to be as solid as it is for you alone. There is no route in which a spouse's presence lowers the funds requirement because they intend to work — a dependant's right to work varies by country and is never something to plan a budget around. The evidence side is covered in proof of funds for a European student visa.
What to do now
- 1Confirm whether your destination allows family accompaniment on your programme and level at all. That answer changes everything else.
- 2Get a certified copy of the marriage registration, and an English certificate if the registrar issues one.
- 3Get 17-digit digital birth certificates for any children, naming both parents.
- 4Put the whole family bundle through attestation at the same time as your own documents — one set of trips, one set of fees.
- 5Budget the additional maintenance evidence honestly before you commit to the plan.

Common questions
Is a court affidavit of marriage accepted by European embassies?+
Generally no. An affidavit is a statement by the parties; a marriage certificate is a record held by a state registrar that a foreign authority can have verified. If a marriage was never registered, the answer is to register it with the appropriate registrar rather than to swear a more detailed affidavit.
Does a Nikahnama need to be translated?+
Usually, because it is issued in Bengali. Ask the registrar first whether they issue an English marriage certificate — many do, and that saves both a translation fee and a step in the attestation chain. Where no English version exists, use a translator your destination mission accepts.
What documents does a child need?+
The digital 17-digit birth certificate naming both parents, verifiable online, plus the child's own passport, which is built from that birth record. Where only one parent travels with the child, a sworn consent affidavit from the other parent is normally required by both the mission and the airline.
Can my spouse come with me from the start?+
Often not. Many European countries restrict family accompaniment to master's and doctoral students, to students who already hold a residence permit, or to those showing substantial extra funds. Check your destination's rule before building a plan around it, and never assume a spouse's earnings will cover the gap.
