Study in Finland from Bangladesh: the full residence permit process, step by step

In short: Apply through Studyinfo in January, take the entrance exam seriously, then apply for the residence permit online through Enter Finland once admission is confirmed — with EUR 9,600 in your own account — and travel to New Delhi once for biometrics. The permit is usually granted for the whole length of the degree.

Finland is one of the fastest-growing destinations for Bangladeshi students, and for concrete reasons: tuition waivers of 50 to 100 percent are common, students may work up to 30 hours a week, and graduates get up to two years to look for work. The process, however, runs on a calendar that forgives nothing.

The timeline, working backwards from a September start

WhenWhat happens
Previous autumnChoose programmes, sit IELTS
JanuaryJoint application on Studyinfo — the main window
February–AprilEntrance exams and interviews
March–JuneAdmission results, seat confirmation
June–JulyPay tuition (after any waiver), apply on Enter Finland
JulyBiometrics in New Delhi
AugustDecision, permit card, flight

The single most common mistake Bangladeshi applicants make is discovering Finland in March — after the window has closed.

Applying: Studyinfo and the entrance exam

Applications go through Studyinfo (opintopolku.fi), Finland's central portal — one application, several programmes in order of preference. Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS) typically admit through an international entrance exam you can sit online; research universities weigh certificates, SAT scores or their own tests depending on the programme. IELTS expectations run 6.0 to 6.5, and scholarship decisions come from the same application — there is no separate scholarship race.

The residence permit: how Migri actually assesses funds

Once admission is confirmed, apply for your first residence permit on Enter Finland. Three rules matter more than everything else:

  • The requirement is EUR 800 per month; for a permit of a year or more, that means EUR 9,600 in the bank on the day you apply.
  • The money must be in your own name. Joint accounts, parents' statements and sponsor guarantees are not accepted.
  • The source must make sense. A lump sum landing the week before you apply invites questions a clean six-month history never faces.

You will also need admission proof, tuition payment or waiver evidence, health insurance that meets Migri's conditions (roughly EUR 300–550 a year), and your academic documents. The online application fee is about EUR 600 — check Migri for the current figure. One piece of genuinely good news: first permits are now usually granted for the entire duration of the degree, so there is no annual renewal cycle.

The Delhi step

Finland has no resident embassy in Dhaka. After applying online you travel once to the Finnish mission in New Delhi to prove your identity and give biometrics. Plan it properly: an Indian visa takes two to four weeks, the appointment should be booked before the flight, and every original document goes with you so one trip settles it.

What goes wrong, in order of frequency

  1. 1Missing the January window — the whole year slips.
  2. 2Funds parked in a parent's account — Migri refuses; move them early, in your own name.
  3. 3Treating the UAS entrance exam as a formality — it is not.
  4. 4Booking Delhi late and colliding with the Indian visa queue.
  5. 5Buying insurance that does not meet Migri's conditions and stalling the application.

Finland rewards early, orderly applicants more than almost any destination we work with. Start in the autumn, and the process is smooth; start in spring, and there is nothing to start.

Common questions

Do Bangladeshi applicants have to travel to Delhi for a Finland permit?+

Yes, under the current arrangement. The application itself is made online through Enter Finland, but Finland has no resident embassy in Dhaka, so you visit the Finnish mission in New Delhi once to prove your identity and give biometrics. Budget for an Indian visa, the flights and two to four extra weeks in your timeline.

Can my parents' bank statement cover the EUR 9,600 requirement?+

No. Migri requires the funds to be in your own name and under your own control. Joint accounts and written sponsor guarantees are not accepted. The practical route is transferring the money to your own account well before applying, with a clear paper trail for where it came from.

How realistic are Finnish tuition scholarships?+

Genuinely realistic — many universities award 50 to 100 percent tuition waivers from the first year, decided from the same application you submit for admission. They are merit-based and competitive, so a strong result and entrance exam score matter, and you should still be able to cover full tuition as a fallback.

How many hours can students work in Finland?+

Up to an average of 30 hours per week during studies — one of the most generous limits in Europe — and after graduation you can apply for a residence permit of up to two years to look for work.
