The distinction to settle first
Nicosia is divided. The southern part is in the Republic of Cyprus — an EU member state, and the country we process applications for. The northern part is under a separate administration, and the international recognition of degrees issued there is an entirely different question that you must resolve before enrolling, not after. Where students actually live
Engomi and Aglantzia sit closest to the universities and are the main student areas. Strovolos and Latsia are large mid-priced residential districts. There is no metro or train — buses are the only public transport, so check the routes before signing a lease.
The universities
- University of Cyprus — state, research-led; some English-taught programmes, many in Greek
- University of Nicosia — private, the island's largest, with a broad English catalogue and a medical school
- European University Cyprus and Frederick University — private, English-taught
Private universities charge more but admit international students more easily; the state university is cheaper and more competitive, with different language conditions.
Work, honestly
Work rights for non-EU students in Cyprus are conditional and restricted to particular sectors, and the rules change. Never take an agent's word for what you are allowed to do — read the immigration and labour authorities' own pages. Tourism work is more available in summer than in winter.

How much does a student need per month in Nicosia?+
Typically EUR 550-850. Rent is moderate by southern European standards, but groceries are imported and summer air conditioning pushes the electricity bill up, so the total is higher than people expect.
Is north Nicosia the same as south Nicosia?+
No. The south is in the Republic of Cyprus, an EU member state and the country we work with. The north is under a separate administration and the international recognition of its degrees is a distinct question you must settle before enrolling.
Is Cyprus in Schengen?+
Cyprus is an EU member state but is outside the Schengen area, so a Cypriot residence permit does not allow free travel within Schengen — you may still need a separate visa.
