Public tuition in Italy is income-assessed, so the low end of that band is real but only if your income documentation is filed correctly. Living costs sit on top: roughly EUR 350-500 a month in Bulgaria at one end and EUR 800-1,200 in Denmark at the other. Price your own shortlist on the cost calculator.

What a master's admission committee is actually reading

Not your CGPA first. A finance master's is a quantitative degree, and the single most common reason a Bangladeshi BBA application is refused is that the transcript shows business subjects and almost no mathematics.

Committees look for evidence of:

  1. 1Calculus, linear algebra or quantitative methods — a named course, with credits, on the transcript
  2. 2Statistics or econometrics — this is the one that matters most
  3. 3Accounting and corporate finance as the subject base
  4. 4Any programming or data work — Excel is assumed, Python or R is a genuine advantage

If your degree is a three-year pass BBA, check the credit position first: several countries expect 180 ECTS and a specific subject profile. See three-year versus four-year bachelor's degrees and how a Bangladeshi CGPA converts.

⚠️ A CFA registration is not a substitute for the quantitative coursework. It is a professional programme you can start alongside a degree, and it is not a qualification any university accepts in place of the mathematics it wants to see.

Where the jobs actually are

This is where most agency advice stops being useful. European finance employment is geographically concentrated, and the concentration is not in the countries with the cheapest tuition.

  • Investment banking, asset management, trading — Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Paris, Dublin, Luxembourg, Zurich. We do not process applications to any of those countries, and a degree from one of our nine does not disqualify you from applying there later, but it does not put you in the room either.
  • Milan is the exception inside our list: Italy's financial industry sits there, and it is the one city in the nine where a finance graduate has a domestic market worth targeting.
  • Cyprus and Malta run large fund-administration, fiduciary, insurance and compliance sectors that genuinely work in English. This is the most realistic English-language finance employment in the nine.
  • Sofia and Budapest host the finance shared-service centres of large multinationals. Entry roles are real and reachable; they usually want English plus one more European language.
  • Stockholm, Copenhagen and Helsinki have strong domestic markets that mostly recruit in the national language.

What the degree does not do

Finance is not a regulated profession in the way medicine or law is, so nobody is going to stop you working. But three things are worth saying plainly:

  • No degree grants a work visa. Staying after graduation runs through each country's own job-search permit rules — see post-study work and residence.
  • Banking front-office roles are among the most competitive in Europe and hire heavily from a small set of universities. A master's from a mid-ranked institution is not a route into them.
  • Salary expectations should be checked, not assumed. Our graduate salaries and ROI article has the honest numbers.

If accounting is really what you mean

A lot of students say finance and mean accounting. They lead to different employers and different professional exams — the accountancy route runs through ACCA and, in the EU, through national statutory-auditor approval. That is covered separately in accounting and the ACCA route.

Before you apply

  1. 1Photocopy your transcript and highlight every quantitative course on it. If there are fewer than three, fix that before you apply, not after a refusal.
  2. 2Shortlist by city employment market, not by tuition alone — the cheapest degree in the wrong city is not cheaper.
  3. 3Check each programme's English requirement; finance master's degrees often want IELTS 6.5 rather than 6.0 (requirements by country).
  4. 4Write a statement that names the sub-field, not just "finance" — see the SOP guide.

Common questions

Do I need a mathematics background for a finance master's in Europe?+

In almost all cases yes. Committees look for named quantitative courses on the transcript, especially statistics or econometrics. A business degree with little mathematics is the most common reason a Bangladeshi finance application is refused, ahead of CGPA.

Which of the nine countries has the best finance job market in English?+

Cyprus and Malta, for fund administration, fiduciary work, insurance and compliance, which genuinely operate in English. Milan has the largest finance industry of the nine but mostly hires in Italian, and Sofia and Budapest have English-speaking finance service centres.

Will a European finance degree get me a job in Frankfurt or London?+

It does not disqualify you, but it does not open the door either. Those markets hire from a narrow set of universities and, for non-EU graduates, the visa route is the harder constraint than the degree. Plan for the country you study in first.

Is the CFA worth doing alongside the degree?+

It can be, as a professional signal for asset management and research roles. It is not a licence, it is not a substitute for the mathematics a university wants on your transcript, and no university accepts it in place of admission requirements.
