Who Padua actually suits
Padua is a public university founded in 1222, half an hour from Venice, in a small city where the university is the main institution. Two things distinguish it for an international applicant: the breadth of its English-taught list, which is unusually wide for an Italian public university, and an admissions process that runs in clear numbered rounds instead of a single opaque window.
It suits someone applying to a science, data or engineering programme who wants a public fee and a manageable city. It suits less well anyone who needs a large job market on the doorstep — Padua is not Milan.

What it is genuinely strong in
Data science, statistics, psychology, molecular and industrial biotechnology, physics and astronomy, ICT and electronic engineering, agricultural and food science, and medicine. Psychology at Padua is one of the oldest and most respected departments in Europe, and its English-taught data science and cybersecurity master's programmes attract heavy international demand.
Apply in the first round, not the last
Padua's rounds matter in a way most applicants miss. Scholarship consideration is attached to the earlier rounds, so applying in the final round can mean full admission and no funding at all. There are two funding layers to understand:

- ESU Padova, the Veneto region's right-to-study agency, which awards fee exemption, a cash grant and priority for housing to students who qualify on income. It has its own separate deadline. The regional map is in which DSU agency applies to you.
How you apply
- 1Choose your programme and read its call for the exact round dates and English requirement.
- 2Register on Apply@UniPD and submit transcripts, syllabi, a motivation letter and the English certificate.
- 3Apply in the earliest round you can complete properly — an incomplete early application is worse than a complete later one.
- 4Run the CIMEA statement or Declaration of Value in parallel.
- 5After the offer, complete Universitaly pre-enrolment, then apply for ESU and file the ISEE parificato once you arrive.
Medicine and the bachelor's entrance tests
Two entry routes at Padua work differently from the rest and catch people out.
Medicine and Surgery in English is entered through a national admission test rather than through ordinary application, with a small number of places contested across Europe. Treat it as a separate, year-long preparation project, not as a second option bolted onto an existing application. And note that an Italian medical degree is a qualification, not a licence: practising in Bangladesh requires BMDC registration and its examination for foreign graduates, and practising in Italy requires Italian registration and the language to work in it.
Several science and engineering bachelor's programmes also use a standardised admission test. Where one applies, the programme call names it and publishes the dates, and it sits alongside the document assessment rather than replacing it. Check this before assuming your application is transcript-only.
The honest part
Padua's English-taught master's programmes in data science and biotechnology are competitive on curriculum content. The committee reads your syllabi to check you covered the mathematics or the laboratory work the programme assumes; a strong CGPA from a degree that did not cover it is still refused. The city is also small, which cuts both ways. Rent is lower than Milan or Rome, but ESU housing places are limited and part-time work in English is thin. Do not build a budget that assumes term-time earnings — see the Padua cost guide.

Does Padua really have more English-taught programmes than other Italian universities?+
Its English-taught catalogue is among the widest at any Italian public university, particularly in data science, biotechnology, psychology and engineering. The list changes each year, so check the current one on the Apply@UniPD site rather than relying on any article.
Do I lose the scholarship if I apply in a later round?+
Often, yes. Scholarship consideration is attached to the earlier application rounds, so a late applicant can be admitted with no funding offered at all. Applying early is the single cheapest thing you can do.
Is Padua a good choice if I need part-time work?+
Less so than Milan or Rome. Padua is a small city, and English-language part-time work is limited, so a budget that depends on term-time earnings is risky. Treat any income as a bonus rather than a plan.
