Who this university suits
The University of Helsinki is a broad research university — sciences, medicine, law, humanities, social sciences, agriculture and forestry, theology. It suits a master's applicant whose bachelor's degree already sits close to the programme they want, who can write a specific motivation letter rather than a general one, and who has the money or a realistic shot at a full waiver.
It suits a school-leaver much less well, because the English-taught bachelor's list is very short. If you are applying straight after HSC, Finland is still worth considering, but the realistic targets are the universities of applied sciences and the small handful of English-taught bachelor's programmes across the sector — not this university's main catalogue.

Where it is strong
- Life sciences, medicine and biosciences — the university's traditional core
- Environmental, atmospheric and forest sciences — a genuine international strength
- Law, social sciences and area studies, including a large humanities faculty
- Data science, computer science and mathematics
Medicine and dentistry are taught in Finnish, so they are not a route for an international applicant with no Finnish. The regulated-professions rule applies here as everywhere: a European degree in a licensed profession is not itself a licence to practise, in Europe or in Bangladesh.
How you apply
Finland runs a national portal. You do not send an application to the university — you file through Studyinfo, and one application can carry up to six programme choices in ranked order. The main international round is a single window in early January for the following autumn; a smaller number of programmes have a second round. The mechanics are in the Studyinfo guide.

⚠️ A tuition waiver is not visa money. The EUR 9,600 requirement is separate and does not shrink because you won a full scholarship. Families read a 100 percent waiver as "the cost problem is solved" and then discover the funds rule six weeks before the permit application.
Where Bangladeshi applications usually fail
Four causes, in roughly the order they occur:
- 1Subject mismatch. The programme wants a named set of prior coursework and the transcript does not show it. This is not fixable by a better essay.
- 2Document handling. Certification and delivery instructions are precise and are followed literally. A scan where a certified copy was demanded is a rejection, not a query.
- 3A generic motivation letter. Helsinki reads for research fit — which research group, which module, why this and not the equivalent programme in Sweden.
- 4Missing the January window. There is one round. Miss it and the answer is next year, regardless of how strong the file is.
Nothing here is a promise. Admission is competitive and no one can guarantee it.

- 1Open the programme page in October and write down its exact prior-study and document requirements.

Common questions
Can I do a bachelor's degree in English at the University of Helsinki?+
Only in a very small number of programmes. The university's English-taught provision is overwhelmingly at master's level, so a school-leaver's realistic Finnish options are usually elsewhere in the sector, including the universities of applied sciences.
Do I need a separate application for the scholarship?+
No. The university's tuition scholarship is normally decided from the admission application itself, with no extra form — which is exactly why the motivation letter and academic record carry so much weight. The award is commonly 50 or 100 percent of tuition.
If I get a full tuition waiver, do I still have to show EUR 9,600?+
Yes. Migri's funds requirement is a residence permit condition and is separate from tuition. A waiver reduces what you pay the university; it does not reduce what you must evidence in your own account.
What is the most common reason a Bangladeshi application is rejected here?+
Subject mismatch — the master's programme requires specific prior coursework that the transcript does not show. Document certification errors and a generic motivation letter come next. None of these are fixed by applying to more programmes.
