In short: The gap between "expensive but open" Anglophone destinations and "cheap but unknown" Europe has narrowed from both ends — the big destinations became more expensive and less certain, while Europe kept tuition at EUR 0–13,000 and proof-of-funds around EUR 6,000–12,000. Which is right for you depends on budget, family plans and how much you value a fast permanent-residence track.

What changed, 2024–26
Canada — undergraduate applicants need a provincial attestation letter (PAL) under the cap system, with 180,000 PAL-bound permits planned for 2026; proof of living funds rises to CAD 23,448 for applications from 1 September 2026 (tuition and travel are separate); spousal open work permits are now limited to specific programme levels.
The UK — since January 2024, taught master's students cannot bring dependants; the Graduate Route stays at two years for applications submitted by 31 December 2026 and falls to 18 months from 1 January 2027 (PhD graduates keep three years).
Australia — living funds of AUD 29,710 for a single applicant, plus AUD 10,394 for a spouse and AUD 4,449 per child, before tuition and travel; the Genuine Student statement adds a strict intent test.

Exchange rates and programmes vary, but the order of magnitude does not: a first year in Italy can cost less than a single semester in Canada or Australia.
Where Europe is genuinely weaker
- Language — classes are in English, but job markets reward Italian, Finnish or Hungarian; the UK and Canada have no such barrier.
- Part-time earnings — student jobs are scarcer in many European cities; a budget that depends on part-time income is a bad budget.
- Community — nothing in Europe matches the Bangladeshi communities of Toronto or London.
- Speed to PR — Canada's points-based system has no European equivalent; Europe's route runs through a job into long-term residence, which is slower and less predictable.
Who should choose what
- Budget under about BDT 15 lakh — Europe is close to the only credible path: Italy (effectively free with DSU), Bulgaria, Greece, or Hungary on a scholarship.
- Budget available, PR is the goal — Canada remains strong; in the cap era, carry a backup plan.
- Bringing a spouse — the UK's taught master's route is closed to dependants; Finland and Sweden now offer the clearest family routes among comparable destinations.
- Research careers — Europe's funded master's-to-PhD pipeline, including Erasmus Mundus, is world-class.
- The one real mistake — making a single country "the dream" and losing a year to it. Prepare two or three realistic options in parallel.

With Canada tightening, is Europe now the only realistic option?+
No — Canada still works, but with more money (CAD 23,448 in living funds plus tuition for applications from September 2026), a provincial attestation letter for undergraduates, and cap-driven uncertainty. The sensible strategy is no longer betting everything on one country: prepare two or three realistic destinations in parallel, matched to your profile and budget.
Does Europe have anything like the UK's post-study visa?+
Yes, and the comparison has narrowed. Finland grants up to two years to look for work after graduation, Denmark up to three, Italy and Sweden about one year — while the UK's Graduate Route drops to 18 months for applications from January 2027. The difference is no longer decisive on its own.
What is the cheapest credible route to a European degree?+
Italy's public universities: income-based tuition that can fall to a few hundred euros, and the DSU scholarship can cover accommodation and meals on top. After Italy, Bulgaria and Greece combine tuition of EUR 1,500–5,000 with low living costs. A realistic first-year budget there is a quarter of what Canada or Australia demands.
