Start with the uncomfortable part
Law is a regulated profession everywhere in Europe, and the regulation is national, not European. There is no such thing as a "European lawyer" qualification you can buy with an LLM.
To appear in court or to hold the protected title in Italy, Sweden, Hungary or anywhere else, you normally need:
- 1That country's own law degree, or a formal recognition decision that yours is equivalent
- 2A traineeship with a qualified lawyer, usually one to three years
- 3That country's bar examination, covering its constitution, its civil code and its procedure
- 4Working command of the national language — proceedings are not conducted in English
The EU directives that let lawyers practise across borders were written for nationals of EU member states holding an EU qualification. As a Bangladeshi graduate, you do not inherit that route, and any adviser who tells you an LLM makes you employable as a European advocate is either confused or selling something.
So what is an LLM actually for
It is genuinely useful, just not for the thing most families assume.
| The LLM is good for | The LLM does not do |
|---|---|
| Compliance, AML and regulatory roles in banks and funds | Let you practise as an advocate in Europe |
| In-house legal and contracts work at multinationals | Replace the Bangladesh Bar Council enrolment exam |
| International organisations, NGOs and policy work | Guarantee a work visa |
| Academia and a subsequent PhD | Convert automatically into a local law degree |
| Teaching and research back in Bangladesh | Qualify you for judicial service anywhere |
Compliance is the honest headline. Cyprus and Malta in particular run large financial-services sectors where anti-money-laundering, sanctions and regulatory-compliance roles are real, English-speaking and hiring — and they take law graduates.
Where it is taught, and what it costs
| Country | English-taught LLM | Typical annual tuition | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Italy | Yes, several | EUR 0-4,000 public | International and EU law are the usual specialisms |
| Hungary | Yes | EUR 0-5,000 | Often paired with Stipendium Hungaricum funding |
| Bulgaria | Limited | EUR 3,000-5,000 | Fewer English-taught law options |
| Greece | Limited | EUR 1,500-4,000 | Some English master's programmes |
| Cyprus | Yes | EUR 3,500-7,000 | Common law influence; strong compliance market |
| Malta | Yes | EUR 5,000-11,000 | English is an official language of the country |
| Finland | Yes | EUR 6,000-13,000 | International and business law |
| Sweden | Yes | EUR 7,000-13,000 | Public international law, human rights |
| Denmark | Yes | EUR 6,000-16,000 | Strong in EU and maritime law |
Public tuition in Italy is income-assessed, so the low end is achievable with correctly filed income documentation. Nordic tuition is a real number for non-EU students and is paid in full unless you win a scholarship — see Nordic scholarships.
What entry actually requires
- An LLB or equivalent law degree. A three-year LLB may need a credit check against the 180 ECTS expectation — see three-year versus four-year bachelor's degrees.
- IELTS 6.0-7.0. Law programmes sit at the higher end because the reading load is heavy.
- A writing sample or motivation letter that names a specific field. "International law" is not a field; "investment treaty arbitration" is.
- Some programmes accept non-law graduates into policy or human-rights master's degrees. Read the entry text carefully rather than assuming.
Coming home
If your plan is to practise in Bangladesh, understand the sequence before you spend anything. Enrolment as an advocate runs through the Bangladesh Bar Council, which requires a law degree from a recognised institution and passing its own enrolment examination. A foreign LLM does not shorten that process, and in most cases does not substitute for the LLB. Plenty of Bangladeshi advocates hold a European LLM — they got the LLB and the enrolment first, and the LLM afterwards, in that order.
⚠️ Verify your own case with the Bar Council directly before assuming any foreign qualification will be accepted. This is a career decision, not a document question.
Before you apply
- 1Write down which of the two goals you actually have: practise law, or work in law-adjacent compliance and policy. They lead to different countries.
- 2If it is compliance, shortlist Cyprus and Malta and read the finance article for the sector picture.
- 3If it is practice in Bangladesh, sequence the Bar Council enrolment before the LLM.
- 4Check the language of instruction line by line — a "law" faculty is not the same as an English-taught programme.

Common questions
Can I practise as a lawyer in Europe with an LLM?+
No. Every European country regulates the legal profession nationally, and admission requires its own qualification, a traineeship, a bar examination and working command of the national language. An LLM is an academic degree and does not begin that process.
Is a European LLM recognised by the Bangladesh Bar Council?+
Enrolment as an advocate in Bangladesh requires a law degree from a recognised institution and passing the Bar Council enrolment examination. An LLM generally does not substitute for the LLB or shorten the process. Verify your specific qualification with the Bar Council before you commit.
What jobs does a European law degree realistically lead to?+
Compliance, anti-money-laundering and regulatory roles in banks, funds and corporate-services firms, in-house contracts work, international organisations and NGOs, and academia. Cyprus and Malta have the largest English-speaking compliance markets among the countries we work with.
Do I need an LLB to apply for an LLM?+
Usually yes for a true LLM. Some human-rights, policy and international-affairs master's programmes accept graduates of other disciplines, so read each programme's entry requirements rather than assuming a single rule.
