Where students actually live

Hervanta is the engineering campus district, with the largest concentration of student housing and the lowest rents. Kaleva and Kaukajärvi are mid-priced; the centre is convenient and dearer. The tram line opened in 2021 and connects Hervanta to the centre, which changed the commute considerably.

The universities

  • Tampere University — technology, engineering, health sciences and social sciences, with a large English-taught master's list
  • Tampere University of Applied Sciences (TAMK) — applied and vocational, with internships built into the curriculum

Work, honestly

Less than Helsinki, more than the rest of Finland. English-language opportunities exist in the technology sector, particularly through internships and thesis projects — which are worth considerably more to a career than a generic part-time job. Everything else needs Finnish.

The honest bits

  1. 1Winters are as long and dark as anywhere else in Finland.
  2. 2Less international than Helsinki — a smaller airport and fewer connections.
  3. 3On the other side: lower costs, a real campus culture, and unusually close ties between the university and the technology industry.

Before you fly

  1. 1Apply to TOAS as soon as you accept your offer.
  2. 2Match funds to Migri's income requirement.
  3. 3Check the Finnish application round — missing it costs a year.

Common questions

Is Tampere cheaper than Helsinki?+

Yes, usually EUR 100-200 a month less, mostly in rent. A TOAS student housing place widens the gap further.

What is Hervanta like to live in?+

It is the engineering campus district, with the biggest concentration of student housing and the lowest rents in the city. It sits away from the centre, but the tram line has made that commute straightforward.

Is there English-language work in Tampere?+

Some, in the technology sector and particularly through internships and thesis projects — less than Helsinki but more than Finland's smaller cities. Ordinary part-time work still requires Finnish.
