Europe vs Russia for medicine: what the cheaper degree actually costs you

This article exists because Russia is one of the most heavily marketed medical destinations in Bangladesh and the comparison deserves an honest treatment rather than silence. We have a commercial interest in the European answer. Every claim below is checkable against the sources at the end, and you should check them.

The comparison

Tuition in both directions moves. Take any figure from the university's own fee page, dated, and never from a brochure.

The cost advantage is real

There is no point pretending otherwise. Russian medical tuition is cheaper than Bulgarian, which is itself the cheapest of the European options, and Russian living costs are low. The Russian government also operates a quota scholarship scheme administered through its official Education in Russia portal, which can reduce or remove tuition for selected applicants.

For a family whose absolute ceiling is below what six years in Bulgaria costs, that difference is not a detail. It is the whole decision.

What the European premium buys

Automatic recognition inside the EU. Medical qualifications obtained in EU and EEA member states benefit from the union's recognition directives, which is why a Bulgarian, Greek or Cypriot medical degree is treated as a European medical degree in every member state. A Russian qualification receives no such treatment. Each European regulator assesses it individually, which may involve additional examinations, supervised practice or a long wait, and there is no guarantee attached to any of it.

If your plan is to return to Bangladesh and practise there, this advantage is worth very little to you. If any part of your plan involves specialising or working in Europe, it is worth almost everything, and it is the honest reason the European option costs more.

A payment route that works. ⚠️ Since 2022, banking restrictions have made sending tuition to Russian institutions from Bangladesh materially harder. Before paying anyone anything, ask the university directly and in writing exactly how it accepts fees from Bangladesh, and be extremely suspicious of any intermediary offering to handle the transfer through a personal or third-country account. Predictable travel. Flight routing and visa arrangements to Russia have become less stable and more expensive since 2022. Over a six-year degree with annual trips home, that is a recurring cost and a recurring risk.

The part that is identical

Neither degree lets you practise in Bangladesh on its own. Medicine is a regulated profession. Registration with the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council requires a one-year internship in an approved Bangladeshi hospital plus the registration qualifying examination, held twice a year. That applies to a Russian graduate and a Bulgarian graduate in exactly the same way.

Write to BM and DC yourself, before enrolling anywhere, and ask in writing what the current route is for a graduate of the specific university you are considering. Keep the reply. This is the most valuable document in the entire process and it costs nothing.

Who should choose what

Russia may be the rational choice if your family's absolute maximum is below the six-year European total, you intend to return to Bangladesh and practise here, you have confirmed BM and DC's position on that specific university in writing, and you have confirmed a legitimate way to pay tuition directly to the institution.

Europe is the better choice if you want a qualification recognised automatically across the EU, you may want to specialise or work in Europe, you want an ordinary and traceable payment route, or you want to reduce the number of things in a six-year commitment that are outside your control.

Stop entirely if an agent is quoting an all-inclusive package, is vague about the university's own published tuition, or proposes any payment route other than directly to the institution.
