Europe vs Japan and South Korea: better salaries, harder language

What we process, and what we do not

ScholarsDream does not process applications to Japan or South Korea. We work with nine European destinations only. This article exists because both countries are increasingly on Bangladeshi students' lists, both have real advantages, and a comparison that pretends otherwise would not be worth reading. We benefit if you choose Europe. Verify everything below against the official portals at the end.

Where Japan and Korea are genuinely stronger

Scholarships with real reach. MEXT covers tuition, a monthly stipend and flights, and the Global Korea Scholarship is comparable. Both are competitive, both are administered through official government channels, and both are more generous than what most European universities offer a Bangladeshi student.

Predictable national tuition in Japan. The standard national-university rate of about JPY 535,800 a year applies regardless of nationality, which is unusual and helpful.

Work hours during study. Japan's 28 hours a week, with the correct permission, is more than any of our nine European countries allows.

Graduate salaries and industrial employment. Engineering, manufacturing, electronics and IT hiring in both countries is deep, and starting salaries generally exceed those in southern and eastern Europe.

Where Europe is stronger

The English-taught catalogue. This is the practical difference. Italy, Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Hungary run large English-taught master's programmes across almost every field. Japan and Korea have been expanding theirs, but the choice remains narrower and concentrated in a smaller set of institutions.

The language cost, stated honestly. ⚠️ You can study in English in Japan or Korea and still be unemployable there. Most graduate hiring expects working Japanese, commonly around JLPT N2, or working Korean, commonly TOPIK level 4 or above. Reaching that from zero realistically takes two to three years of serious study alongside your degree. Nobody who sells you a Japanese or Korean programme will put that sentence in the brochure.

Europe has a version of the same problem — Italian and Hungarian jobs want Italian and Hungarian — but the European gap between classroom English and workplace language is smaller in technology and research, and the writing system is not an additional barrier.

Mobility. An EU degree and an EU residence permit carry rights across a bloc of twenty-seven countries. A Japanese or Korean qualification is a single-country proposition.

Who should choose what

Japan or Korea is the better choice if you can win MEXT or the Global Korea Scholarship, you are genuinely willing to commit to learning the language to a professional standard, you are targeting electronics, manufacturing, robotics or automotive engineering, or you want the highest realistic graduate salary of the options on this page.

Europe is the better choice if you want the widest English-taught choice, you want to convert a degree into work without first clearing a language exam, you want the option of moving between countries afterwards, or your subject sits outside the fields where Japanese and Korean industry hires heavily.

Apply in parallel if the deadlines allow, which they usually do. MEXT and GKS cycles do not clash with European ones, and a rejection from a competitive national scholarship should not cost you a whole year. If Europe is on your list, start with the country chooser and the Nordic comparison, and take the eligibility check.

Common questions

Does ScholarsDream process applications to Japan or South Korea?+

No. We work only with nine European destinations: Italy, Cyprus, Hungary, Malta, Finland, Greece, Denmark, Sweden and Bulgaria. This comparison is published for information because both countries are now common alternatives on Bangladeshi students' lists.

Can I work in Japan or Korea after an English-taught degree?+

You can apply, but most graduate hiring expects working Japanese, commonly around JLPT N2, or working Korean, commonly TOPIK level 4 or above. Reaching that from zero realistically takes two to three years alongside your studies. Studying in English and working in English are two different questions in both countries.

How many hours can a student work in Japan?+

Up to 28 hours a week, provided you hold the required permission to engage in activity other than that permitted under your status of residence. That is more than any of the nine European countries we cover allows, where the range is 15 to 30 hours depending on the country.
