The thing that decides your application
European economics is not the economics most Bangladeshi undergraduates studied. At master's level it is a mathematical subject built on optimisation, probability and econometrics, and admissions committees assess it that way.
They will look for, and often name explicitly:
- Calculus, single and multivariable
- Linear algebra
- Probability and statistical inference
- Econometrics, ideally with a software component
- Sometimes real analysis at the more theoretical departments
They will then read your transcript to check that you took those courses and passed them well. The degree title is not the qualification; the transcript is. A four-year BSS or BA in economics that concentrated on development theory, economic history and policy description will frequently be refused by a quantitative department, however good the grades.
⚠️ This is the single most common reason economics applications from Bangladesh fail, and almost nobody is told it in advance. Find it out now rather than after four rejections.
Read your own transcript honestly
Count the courses. If you have two or fewer mathematics and statistics courses, a general MSc Economics at a research-oriented European department is unlikely, and applying anyway wastes fees and months.
That is not the end of the plan. It changes which door you use.
The realistic routes if your transcript is light
| Route | What it is | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Applied or development economics | Less theory-heavy, policy and empirical focus | Italy, Hungary, Greece, the Nordics |
| Business economics or management | Sits in a business school, lighter mathematics | Widely available |
| A quantitative bridging or pre-master's year | Adds the missing mathematics before the master's | Offered by some universities; ask directly |
| Data analytics with an economics application | Quantitative but taught from scratch | See data science and AI |
| Self-study, then apply | Take and pass formal mathematics and statistics courses and show certificates | Slowest, cheapest, and it does work |
Development economics deserves a specific mention. It is a legitimate, respected field, it is less mathematically brutal than core theory, and a Bangladeshi applicant writing about labour markets, microfinance, remittances or climate adaptation has genuine subject knowledge rather than borrowed examples.
Where to study among the nine
| Country | Notes | Tuition per year |
|---|---|---|
| Italy | Strong public economics departments at Bologna, Venice and Rome, income-assessed tuition; also private business schools at much higher fees | EUR 0-4,000 public |
| Sweden | Quantitative departments at Stockholm, Lund, Uppsala and Gothenburg | EUR 7,000-13,000 |
| Denmark | Copenhagen and Aarhus, quantitative and well regarded | EUR 6,000-16,000 |
| Finland | Helsinki, Aalto and Hanken | EUR 6,000-13,000 |
| Hungary | Corvinus in Budapest; the cheapest funded route via Stipendium Hungaricum | EUR 0-5,000 |
| Greece | Athens University of Economics and Business teaches English-language master's programmes | EUR 1,500-4,000 |
| Bulgaria and Cyprus | Lowest-cost EU economics degrees, taught in English | EUR 3,000-7,000 |
Economics is not finance, and not banking
Another honest correction. A master's in economics does not train you to work in a bank, and European banking and asset-management recruitment is competitive, often local-language, and frequently prefers finance-specific degrees. If your actual goal is a finance career, apply to finance programmes rather than assuming economics leads there.
The economics jobs that do exist in volume: public sector and central bank research, regulators, consultancies, international organisations, and — increasingly the largest category — data and analytics roles in industry, which hire economics graduates for their econometrics rather than their theory.
The language reality
Public-sector economics, policy and regulatory work is national work, in national languages. International organisations, consultancies and analytics roles run in English. Read post-study work and residence before assuming the degree converts to a job, and treat the free language course as part of the programme.
Where it is oversubscribed
At the top, severely. The well-known quantitative departments receive very large numbers of international applications and select hard on mathematics. The shorter queues are in applied and development economics, in regional universities with good departments and no international reputation, and in Greece, Hungary and Bulgaria, where the cost is also a fraction of the Nordic figure.
Concrete next steps
- 1Count the mathematics and statistics courses on your own transcript today, before doing anything else.
- 2If the count is low, choose one of the five routes above rather than applying blind.
- 3Learn one statistical package properly — R, Stata or Python — and put it on your CV.
- 4Shortlist one cheap option and one strong option with the country comparison tool and check the Stipendium Hungaricum route.

Common questions
Why are economics applications from Bangladesh often rejected?+
Because European master's economics is mathematical and committees read the transcript, not the degree title. They look for calculus, linear algebra, probability, statistics and econometrics. A BSS or BA that concentrated on development theory and policy description frequently fails that check regardless of the grades.
What can I do if my transcript has little mathematics?+
Five things work: applied or development economics, business economics at a business school, a quantitative bridging year where a university offers one, a data analytics programme that teaches the mathematics from scratch, or taking and passing formal mathematics and statistics courses yourself and showing the certificates.
Will an economics master's get me a banking job in Europe?+
Not reliably. Economics is not finance, and European banking recruitment is competitive, often conducted in the local language, and frequently prefers finance-specific degrees. The economics roles that exist in volume are in public sector and central bank research, regulators, consultancies, international organisations, and data and analytics work in industry.
