Travelling home during your studies, and getting back in

The normal case is genuinely simple

If you hold a valid residence permit card and a valid passport, going home for a holiday and coming back is ordinary international travel. You do not need a new visa. You show the passport and the card at check-in and again at the border, and that is the whole procedure.

Almost everything that goes wrong is a variation on the card not being valid, not being issued, or not being with you.

The four states you can be in

⚠️ A receipt is not a travel document. Some countries have arrangements allowing a direct return using an acknowledgement plus the expired card, but they are country-specific, they often require a direct flight to that country with no transit through another Schengen state, and the airline may still refuse you. Confirm in writing with the immigration authority before booking anything, and get the confirmation on paper.

Why the airline is the real gate

Under international carrier liability rules, an airline that flies a passenger who is then refused entry pays a penalty and has to return them. The consequence for you is practical: check-in staff resolve doubt by refusing boarding. They are not immigration officers, they are working from a system that either recognises your document or does not.

This is why an unusual but technically valid situation — a pending renewal, an expired card with a receipt, a permit in a passport that has since been replaced — so often ends at the counter in Dhaka rather than at a European border.

If your situation is anything other than a plain valid card, print the authority's own written confirmation and carry it. It will not guarantee boarding, but it is the only thing that helps.

What to carry, every time

Points 3 to 6 are rarely requested from a card holder, and they weigh nothing. Carry them.

The renewal trap

The single most common re-entry problem is not a first-year student at all. It is a second-year student whose permit expires in October, who files the renewal in September, who then flies home in December while the file is still open, and who discovers that the receipt in their hand is not enough to come back.

The fix is calendar discipline:

• Know your card's expiry date by heart and set a reminder three months before it.
• File the renewal as early as the authority allows. Early filing is the only lever you control.
• Do not book non-refundable travel while a renewal is pending.
• If travel during a pending renewal is genuinely unavoidable, ask the immigration authority in writing what document they will issue for return travel, and accept that the answer may be nothing.

Passport changes and other quiet problems

If you renew your Bangladeshi passport while abroad, the residence permit may be linked to the old passport number. Report the change to the immigration authority and carry both passports if you are told to. The same applies after a name correction — an inconsistency between passport and permit is exactly the kind of thing a check-in system flags.

Also worth knowing: time spent outside the country can matter later. Several countries count continuous residence towards permanent residence or long-term status, and long absences can interrupt it. Before you book
