Finland's AMK: what a university of applied sciences really is

What an AMK actually is

Finland runs two parallel higher education sectors, and both are real universities. The research universities do academic degrees and research; the AMKs do professionally oriented degrees developed with regional employers. An AMK graduate holds a recognised Finnish higher education degree — a Bachelor of Engineering, a Bachelor of Health Care, a Bachelor of Business Administration.

The size difference is the clearest signal that this is not a shorter or lesser route. An AMK bachelor's is 210 to 270 ECTS against a research university's 180, because the practical training period is inside the degree. You are studying longer, not less.

Practical training is where the curriculum has you apply what you have learned in an actual workplace and get to know the profession. For a Bangladeshi student this is genuinely valuable: it is supervised Finnish work experience on your CV before you graduate, in a country where getting that first local experience is the hard part.

The rule that surprises people

An AMK master's requires two years of relevant work experience after the bachelor's. Study in Finland states it directly. This is not a preference or a tiebreaker — it is an eligibility condition.

The consequence is concrete. You cannot finish an AMK bachelor's in Finland and roll straight into an AMK master's the following autumn. You work first. That is by design: the AMK master's is built for people already in the profession, and the classroom assumes it.

If you want to go straight into a master's after a bachelor's, apply to a research university's master's programme instead, where no work requirement applies. Moving from an AMK bachelor's into a university master's is possible but sometimes requires bridging studies, decided programme by programme.

Applying

Both sectors use the same national system: one joint application in January for autumn start, up to six programmes on a single application, ranked in your order of preference. Two practical notes. First, ranking matters — you can be admitted to only one place, and the system works down your list, so put the programme you actually want first. Second, non-EU applicants normally pay an application fee, and it is per application round, not per programme.

Fees and money

Finland charges non-EU/EEA students tuition for English-taught bachelor's and master's degrees at both AMKs and research universities. AMK fees typically fall in the region of EUR 5,000-13,000 a year in 2026, varying widely by institution and field, and most AMKs run their own scholarship schemes that waive a share of the fee for students who progress on schedule.

What the placement is actually worth

The compulsory practical training is the strongest single argument for an AMK, and it is worth being concrete about why.

Every international graduate in Finland faces the same wall after the degree: employers want Finnish experience, and you cannot get Finnish experience without a Finnish employer. The AMK placement puts you inside a Finnish workplace as part of the curriculum, with the institution's relationships doing the introduction. You finish with a supervisor who can be a reference, a line on your CV that is not from Dhaka, and a realistic sense of how the sector hires.

It is not a guaranteed job, and nobody should sell it as one. But it converts the hardest problem in the post-study year — getting a first foot in — into a curriculum requirement someone else helps you meet. Against a research university degree with no placement, that is a genuine difference rather than a brochure line.

Should you choose an AMK?

Choose an AMK if you want a professional qualification with employer contact built in, you value the compulsory placement, and your goal is to work in the field rather than to research it. Engineering, nursing, business, IT and hospitality are its strongest areas.

Choose a research university if you want a master's immediately after your bachelor's, you are aiming at a doctorate — see how a PhD in Finland is funded — or your field is fundamentally academic.

What neither will do is get you a job without Finnish. English-taught degrees are common and Finnish workplaces in tech are often English-speaking, but most part-time student work is not, and the language is the single biggest determinant of how your years in Finland actually go. The placement helps; it does not replace the language.
