Converting a Bangladeshi driving licence in Europe

The rule that actually decides it

There is no single European rule for foreign licences. Each country decides which non-EU licences it will exchange directly, and that decision rests on whether it has a recognition or reciprocity arrangement with the issuing country. Licences from other EU and EEA states are recognised automatically; licences from outside are not.

For Bangladesh, the practical position across our nine countries is that direct exchange is generally not available. That is not a judgement on Bangladeshi driving standards; it is simply that the agreements do not exist. A handful of countries will credit some of your experience by reducing the compulsory lesson requirement, but the test itself remains.

Check the position for your own country before you assume either way — the authority that publishes it is the national transport or road safety agency, and the answer occasionally changes.

What an International Driving Permit actually buys

An International Driving Permit (IDP) obtained in Bangladesh is a translation of your existing licence, not a licence in itself. It has three limits students routinely misunderstand:

1. 1It is only valid alongside your original Bangladeshi licence. Carry both or neither works.
2. 2It is valid for a limited period, typically one year from issue.
3. 3Most importantly, it only helps during the country's grace period for new residents — commonly six to twelve months from the date you register as resident. After that window, your foreign licence plus IDP stops being accepted for a resident, regardless of what is printed on it.

⚠️ Driving after the grace period on a foreign licence usually means driving unlicensed, which usually means driving uninsured. In an accident that is a catastrophic outcome: no insurance cover, personal liability for the damage, a criminal offence in most of these countries, and a record that surfaces at your next residence permit renewal. Nothing about student life is worth that risk.

What it costs to get a licence properly

Typical all-in costs as at September 2026, covering the theory course, compulsory lessons, tests and fees. Driving schools price individually and the number of lessons you need varies, so these are broad ranges.

For most students, the honest recommendation is: do not do this in your first year. It is a large sum against a student budget, the public transport in every city we send students to is good, and a student transport pass plus a second-hand bicycle covers ordinary life for a fraction of the cost.

When it genuinely is worth it

• Your degree or placement requires it — some agriculture, engineering, veterinary and social work placements are outside public transport networks.
• You intend to stay and work in that country after graduating, and the licence is a job requirement. In that case it belongs in your final year, not your first.
• You live in a rural campus town with genuinely poor transport.

If any of those apply, start with the theory in your second year when your language is better and the test is easier.

Practical points

• Bring your Bangladeshi licence and an IDP anyway, even if you do not plan to drive. Both are useful identity documents and cost little.
• Some countries reduce the compulsory lesson count for holders of a foreign licence. Ask the driving school, in writing, before you pay.
• The theory test language matters. Malta, Cyprus and often Hungary and Finland offer it in English; Italy usually does not, which turns a driving test into a language test.
• Renting a car on a Bangladeshi licence plus IDP is generally possible within the grace period, and generally refused after it. Rental companies check residence.
